French Exit

This looks quite amusing. I’ve heard mostly good things about it during its festival run, and it seems like a lot will depend on whether or not the sense of humor works for you. By the looks of the trailer it seems pretty funny. What was agreed upon by basically everybody was that Michelle Pfeiffer is amazing in the film, and I can definitely see it within the few minutes we saw of her here. I’m not expecting a lot, but it looks fun.

French Exit hits theaters on February 12th, 2021.

American Skin

I remember looking forward to Nate Parker’s The Birth Of A Nation, and then learning about his rape allegations, which was disappointing for sure. Then the movie itself turned out to be not all that good anyway, but it seemed like neither of those could stop him from continuing his career. Before you accuse me of being biased or whatever, I think this movies looks pretty good. Granted, this is full on exploitation film, and I like exploitation movies. I’m actually surprised an idea like this hasn’t really been done yet. It is very touchy subject matter, but it Parker has gotten one message across, it’s that he doesn’t mind getting touchy with sensitive areas.

American Skin will hit select theaters and VOD platforms on January 15th, 2021.

We Can Be Heroes

Robert Rodriguez has made the move to Netflix. I guess it makes sense, especially if it’s for one of his weird kids movies. Aside from a couple of the Spy Kids movies, I haven’t seen some of the others, and I believe this is meant to be a stealth sequel to The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D, which I haven’t seen. This looks fine, I guess, if this is your kinda thing. It doesn’t look like my kinda thing, so I’m probably gonna skip this. But hey, if you’re nostalgic for this kinda stuff, I hope you like it.

We Can Be Heroes will be released on Netflix on December 25th.

Blithe Spirit

This looks like a ton of fun. Apparently, it’s based on a play from the early 40s, which had already been previously adapted into a film in 1945 by none other than the David Lean. I might actually watch that before this comes out, just to compare how they approach the material. I have a feeling this one will be more broad and over-the-top, but that doesn’t have to mean it’s a bad thing. I like this cast, and I like seeing Dan Stevens in a more comic role. This is one I’m really looking forward to.

Blithe Spirit will open in select theaters and VOD platforms on February 19th, 2021.

The Marksman

We can’t usher into the new year without the promise of getting our obligatory Liam Neeson thriller, and yeah, I’m not even complaining really. This is clearly not breaking the mold or doing anything all that new, but it’ll make for a nice comfort watch, I suppose. Sometimes, it’s just nice to sit and watch an undemanding action movie, and Neeson has been the one to consistently deliver on this, so…yeah, I’ll watch it.

The Marksman opens in theaters on January 22nd, 2021.

Pinocchio

So, for you youngsters, a long time ago in the year 1998, Roberto Benigni was on top of the world when his film Life Is Beautiful not only won him the Best Foreign Language Oscar, but also Best Actor. And all that clout he had built was just as quickly flushed down the toilet when he followed up with the most expensive Italian film at the time, Pinocchio, in 2002, which turned out to be an utter disaster. So, it’s really interesting to me to see him come back for another adaptation, this time directed by Matteo Garrone, and starring as Geppetto. I think this looks really cool, and apparently, the boy is mostly makeup instead of CG. I loved Garrone’s Tale Of Tales, and it looks like some of those aesthetics are here too. I’m really intrigued by this, and it will surely make for an enticing look at the story before we get Guillermo del Toro’s stop motion version of this story.

Pinocchio will be released in select theaters on December 25th.
