Flux Gourmet

I’m very much all in on Peter Strickland at this point, he has yet to let me down as a filmmaker, so it’s great to see him back with a new project. Can’t say I quite get what’s going on here, but it’s a nice tease, and it’s weird, and hardly anyone does weird better than Strickland. Whatever this is, I am so down.

Flux Gourmet will be released on a currently unspecified date in the summer of 2022.

Men

You know else I’m always down for? Alex freakin’ Garland, I mean, come on, folks. Ex Machina, Annihilation, Devs, and that’s not even mentioning his work as a screenwriter, prior to going behind the camera. This looks interesting, and pretty different from what we’ve usually seen from him. Almost has a Ben Wheatley vibe. I love Jessie Buckley as an actor, she’s a terrific performer, and with her recent Oscar nomination, I’m glad to see her get more exposure. This is definitely another film I’m highly anticipating.

Men hits theaters on May 20th.

Firestarter

Well, if seeing Zac Efron in a dad role doesn’t make you feel old, I don’t know what will. I haven’t seen the original Firestarter in a very long time, so I don’t remember much in terms of its story, so it’ll be cool to see this with some fresh eyes. Also, I gotta shame the marketing department here for not capitalizing on the fact that they have John Carpenter and his crew working on the score for this. He’s a big enough name for that to be at least mentioned in the trailer for a film like this, and if there’s any reason one needs to see this, it’s for some new Carpenter jams.

Firestarter opens in theaters and Peacock on May 13th.

Ahed’s Knee

Nadav Lapid seems to be a bit of a critical darling, and unfortunately, the one film I’ve seen of his – Synonyms, was not for me. I am willing to give Policeman and The Kindergarten Teacher a shot, since they seem more up my speed. And this doesn’t look half bad either. The trailer doesn’t tell a whole lot about what’s going on, but going by the rather extensive description under the video, it does sound intriguing. I don’t know if it’s one I’ll rush to see, but I’m sure it’ll be one I catch up on before the year is over.

Ahed’s Knee opens in select theaters on March 18th.

Ted K

I like Sharlto Copley, I feel like I haven’t seen him in a while. I honestly, never would have considered him as the Unabomber, but it actually seems pretty obvious. Not only does he have a bit of a resemblance, but the voice is a lot closer than you’d think. Look up Kaczynski’s voice, it’s pretty similar to what Copley is doing here. As far as the movie here goes, I think it has potential as this off-beat Paul Schrader-esque character study, even if it does look like it was filmed the funds of a single credit card limit. Don’t know who this Tony Stone guy is, but Copley is also listed as a producer, so perhaps this is a bit of a passion project, wouldn’t surprise me. I might give this a shot because if it’s good, it could be something really special.

Ted K hits select theaters and VOD platforms on February 18th.

Lightyear

I’m pretty much convinced that this was developed as an original idea, and some suit got nervous that a non-IP space adventure movie wouldn’t be a success, so they retooled it as a Buzz Lightyear movie. Or at least, it wouldn’t surprise me if that was the case because this is looking really, really good, and not just because I’m a sucker for space movies to begin with. It looks like a ton of fun, and nowhere near the kind of quality you’d expect from something that is basically a cash grab.

Lightyear will be released in theaters on June 17th.
