Fire Island

This looks solid! Honestly, the main reason I’m interested in this is because it’s directed by Andrew Ahn, who made one of my favorite films of 2020, Driveways. I haven’t seen his debut film, Spa Night, but by the looks of it, there are some thematic connections in Fire Island that are closer to that film than something like Driveways, though this is clearly his most lighthearted and comedic fare so far. I’m curious to see how the gentle sensibilities of Driveways translates to this particular genre.

Fire Island will be released exclusively on Hulu on June 3rd.

Bodies Bodies Bodies

I don’t know if I’m 100% sold on this, but I am intrigued. I like the idea of a whodunnit among a bunch of angsty youngsters. Throw a random Lee Pace in, and you got yourself a ticket sold. By the way, did Maria Bakalova have a single line in this trailer or did I miss it? Anyway, I’m am curious about this, but it’s not something I’m gonna hold my breath for. This is a directorial debut for a Halina Reijn, who I haven’t heard of prior to this, so not sure what to expect. That could ultimately be a good thing, we’ll see.

Bodies Bodies Bodies hits theaters on August 5th.

On The Count Of Three

I remember hearing about this at last year’s Sundance, and I’ve been curious about it ever since. I’ve really enjoyed Jerrod Carmichael in everything I’ve seen him in, and he’s clearly got a unique vision, tackling such a dark subject matter in this manner. He’s also got one hell of a cast assembled here.  I’m very excited to check this out. Also, I feel like it’s been forever since I’ve seen that Annapurna logo, good to see them back in the game.

On The Count Of Three hits select theaters and VOD platforms on May 13th.

Flux Gourmet

I did talk about this briefly when the teaser was first released, and my thoughts on it are pretty much the same. I’m all in on whatever Peter Strickland makes. Also, I feel like I still have little idea on what exactly this is about, and that’s great. And somehow, it didn’t really register with me at first, or perhaps I just forgot, that Asa Butterfield is in this. This is a pretty strong trailer, and I’m happy to see more of it before it comes out. Gonna see if I can nab a screener from IFC.

Flux Gourmet opens in select theaters and VOD platforms on June 24th.

Night Sky

I’m really enjoying the Amazon series, Outer Range, I love sci-fi stories that are able to have one foot in the fantastical and one foot in reality like that show, and it looks like this series will be doing the same. I also dig that the leads are older, it’s cool to see J. K. Simmons and Sissy Spacek lead something like this. The idea is really interesting, and right up my alley. I’ll definitely give it a look.

Night Sky premieres on Amazon Prime Video on May 20th.

Il Buco

If you’re gonna start off your trailer with a critic blurb, you certainly can’t get better than praise from Bong Joon-ho. I think I recall vaguely hearing about this film, but not looking too deep into it. It’s got a compelling vibe, and it looks incredible from a purely visual standpoint. I feel like it’s definitely one of those films that’s more about the sensory experience than it is about the plot or even the characters, and when done well, that could be something special. Definitely curious to check it out.

Il Buco will open at the Film Forum on May 13th before expanding.
