Family Switch
This doesn’t look half bad honestly. I like that the body switching is extended to an entire family, and it seems to be having fun with that premise, even if the route is ultimately going to be pretty predictable. McG being behind the camera is throwing me off, some of the shots do have his stank on it, I don’t think he’s done a family picture before, but I am morbidly curious to see if he can pull it off. It seems like he’s made a home for himself at Netflix, so he must be getting something out of it. Anyway, I might check this out if the word is good, could be a solid family comedy.

Manodrome
I don’t know if the world is ready for a mildly jacked Jesse Eisenberg. Jokes aside, I feel like similar thematic territory was already explored better and more humor in The Art Of Self-Defense, also starring Eisenberg. Evoking something like Fight Club is not something to be done lightly, especially if you aren’t gonna go as hard as that movie does. I haven’t seen anything from John Trengove, so maybe he does have something clever up his sleeve that I wouldn’t know about having not seen his work, but I’m always open to the possibility.
Manodrome hits select theaters on November 10th before being available on VOD platforms on November 17th.
Finestkind
I think this looks great. Love a good crime drama, and I like seeing one that takes place in a world that I am just not even remotely familiar with. I haven’t seen a ton of movies about the fisherman community, so this will be pretty interesting to watch from that perspective, plus the cast assembled here is terrific all around. Bummer that it’s going straight to streaming, but at least that means a lot of people will be able to access it as soon as it’s out. Can’t wait.

Lisa Frankenstein
I’m very excited for this. I love Diablo Cody, I love her voice as a writer, and I’m really interested to see how the first feature from Zelda Williams will pan out. It looks like a lot of fun to me, a lot classic Cody-isms here, the genre bending is really appealing as well. Just looks like a hoot, and perfectly setup for a Valentines release. This is definitely one of my more highly anticipated films of next year.
Lisa Frankenstein will be released in theaters on February 9th, 2024.
Freud’s Last Session
I had no idea this was even a thing before seeing the trailer, but I am hooked. What a fun premise. I don’t know if this encounter between these two men actually happened, I know the film is based on a play that is based on a book, but I don’t know if there’s any truth in it. Even if there isn’t, it’s a neat little exercise, and it looks like they’ll do a lot of interesting visual things to make scenes of two guys talking a lot more compelling to watch. This is very much on my radar now.
Freud’s Last Session opens in select theaters on December 22nd before expanding in January 2024.
Stamped From The Beginning
I haven’t read the book this documentary is based on, but I am really enraptured by the use of animation to get the ideas across. I’m guessing this gets into a lot of eugenicist and other pseudo-scientific beliefs regarding Black people, since it seems to focus specifically on how their “inferiority” has been created, justified, and spread over centuries. Maybe that’s just one aspect of it, hard to tell, but I’m definitely going to make time for this one. It looks really engaging and insightful, and I need to get my game up on the docs that have come out this year.
