Extraction

So much yellow in this movie. The sky is yellow, the dirt is yellow, the buildings are yellow, even Hemsworth’s face looks pretty yellow. Whoever color graded this maybe went a touch too far. But whatever, it looks fine, I guess. A broody Chris Hensworth killing through swarms of South Asian dudes. Alright. I’m still chuckling over the fact that Joe and Anthony Russo seem to consider themselves “visionary directors.” They’re only producing, though. The director did second unit work for them, and does stunt work as well, Sam Hargrave, and it looks like he does a solid job here. It doesn’t look great, but it’ll probably do well enough to pass the time.

Extraction hits Netflix on April 24th.

Selah And The Spades

I can’t say I’m entirely sold on this trailer. I just have a hard time taking any movie seriously that tries to describe a school like a prison yard with a straight face. Granted, that’s just the trailer. The word on this from its Sundance premiere is pretty good, so maybe something about this film is hard to advertise. Either way, the trailer doesn’t intrigue me, but the word-of-mouth is. Plus, I like Jharrel Jerome. He’s a good actor, and I like seeing him pop up in more things.

Selah And The Spades will be released on Amazon Prime on April 17th.

The Half Of It

I’m really digging this trailer. It’s not what I expected at all. I like the idea of exploring queer identity through a story that’s ultimately revolving around a friendship between the girl and the guy she’s trying to help. It’s a really interesting premise, and it’s kind of wild to me that writer/director, Alice Wu, hasn’t made a film since her debut Saving Face 15 years ago. I’m looking forward to this.

The Half Of It will be available on Netflix on May 1st.

The Sharks

Never heard of this? Don’t worry, neither did I. I gotta look hard for stuff since trailers aren’t being released in their usual frequency, but it can give some smaller stuff to get some exposure, hopefully. This is a film by writer/director, Lucía Garibaldi, a filmmaker from Uruguay. It’s a coming of age film that also premiered at this past Sundance, to some solid buzz. It looks very pretty, but it doesn’t quite give much in the way of what it’s all about, and honestly, as a trailer, it feels a bit haphazardly put together. I’m sure the film itself is fine.

The Sharks arrive on VOD platforms on April 14th.

How To Build A Girl

I don’t know if I’m the only one, but I’m not totally feeling Beanie Feldstein here. I’m not sure if it’s because the accent is bad, or simply because I can tell she’s putting on an accent. I just find it weirdly off-putting since everyone else is a British actor. But she’s great in everything I’ve seen her in, so I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt here. The story seems interesting enough, kinda getting Almost Famous vibes, which is neat. Accent aside, I’m curious about this.

How To Build A Girl hits VOD platforms on May 8th.

A quick note: I am grateful to everyone who comes over, and reads my stuff. I hope it provides some kind of distraction from all the things that are happening out there because of the COVID-19 situation. Having said that, my usual source of income is gone because of the pandemic, so while I am thankfully in a slightly better position than most, any contribution to my PayPal (which you can do so here) would be greatly appreciated. If you have any ideas for incentives for people who donate, I’m all ears, feel free to get in touch. Obviously, you don’t have to if you don’t want to, only give if you are able, and of course prioritize the ones in need around you. Stay safe, and thanks to anyone who donates!
