Elvis

I don’t know, I think this looks pretty cool. While I don’t love all of Baz Luhrmann’s films, he’s one of those filmmakers I’m always going to e curious about because he has such a distinctive vibe. This trailer is a bit weird though because the opening line implies the film is from the perspective of Tom Hanks’ character, Elvis’ manager, but the rest of the trailer looks like fairly standard biopic material. It is interesting that we haven’t gotten a definitive Elvis biopic yet, there are only two other notable productions, but all were made-for-TV, and also titled “Elvis,” the 1979 John Carpenter one and the CBS miniseries from 2005. Luhrmann feels like a perfect fit for an Elvis film, so I think this might turn out pretty interesting. I’m actually looking forward to this.

Elvis hits theaters on June 24th.

Hustle

This looks slick as hell, love some of the shot compositions here. It’s a good trailer, but it’s so game heavy as opposed to character focused that I feel like I might not be that much into it since sports aren’t really my thing. Doesn’t do a lot in setting up who exactly we’re following and what’s going on, but then again, it is just a teaser. This is directed by Jeremiah Zagar, who made his debut with the pretty solid 2018 film, We The Animals. I’m curious to see his follow-up here.

Hustle hits Netflix on June 10th.

Black Crab

I think we seriously undervalue Noomi Rapace’s range as an actor, the fact that she can go from drama to sci-fi to just plain weird arthouse horror to leading action movies, there’s not many actors who seem to be as unpredictable as her. This looks great. I love the whole conceit about having these soldiers traverse on ice, it presents a really fascinating scenario, and there’s a solid motivation for the lead here. I’m excited for this.

Black Crab hits Netflix on March 18th.

Happening

I heard some good things about this one. I was actually at a theater recently that was playing this as a part of a festival, and someone fainted during a rather harrowing abortion sequence near the end (sorry if that’s a spoiler). Didn’t think I’d see one of those happen in person. Anyway, this has been on my radar for a while, so I’m glad to see this finally get a release here in the US. I can’t wait to see it.

Happening opens in theaters on May 6th.

Windfall

I recall watching The One I Love, and not being very into it, and I hadn’t seen The Discovery. But Andrew Kevin Walker being a co-writer here is very intriguing, and I do like these actors. It’s hard to really get a grasp on this one because it definitely feels like they’re hiding some big twists and turns, and stuff like that could make or break a film like this. Who knows, I’ll definitely keep an open mind going into this as I usually do, and maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Windfall will be released on Netflix on March 18th.

Dear Mr. Brody

This is the new documentary from Keith Maitland, who directed Tower, which is one of my favorite documentaries in recent memory. I have never heard of this Michael Brody guy, he certainly seems like quite the character. In trying to look him up, I did see what fate befell upon him, and I’m curious if the doc will touch on that. There’s definitely a lot to explore here not only with the guy, but with all the people who sent him these letters. Lots of potential for great filmmaking here, so I’m very much on board for this, I can’t wait to see it.

Dear Mr. Brody opens in select theaters and VOD platforms on March 4th.
