Eileen

I really dug Lady Macbeth, so I’m glad to see William Oldroyd back with a new film. This certainly looks very interesting, and I love the cast assembled here. The trailer is quite enticing, I don’t know what exactly is going on, and I haven’t heard of this book, so I have very little expectations on where this will be going, but if it’s as wild as this trailer seems to imply, it looks like we’re gonna be in for one hell of a ride. Can’t wait.

Eileen hits select theaters on December 1st before expanding on December 8th.

American Fiction

Funny gag there at the end. This was a pleasant surprise. I haven’t read much into it, but I know the word-of-mouth on this from its festival run was quite good, I didn’t even realize this was a straight up comedy, and a satirical one at that. I love what it’s going for, it looks very sharp and doesn’t seem like it’s one to hold back. I love Jeffrey Wright as a performer, and this is exactly the kind of character suited for his sensibilities and humor. If the movie is as good as this trailer is promising, we might have something special.

American Fiction opens in select theaters on December 15th before going wide on December 22nd.

The Zone Of Interest

A new Jonathan Glazer picture is something to be looking forward to, there is no doubt about that. However, I think this trailer does leave a bit to be desired. I have looked into the basic premise of what the film is about, and admittedly, I don’t know how you would advertise that, but I think this trailer is lacking in a hook, relying on a lot of the atmospheric indulgences that you usually get from A24’s marketing. Still, I’m sure it will be as good as everyone says, it’s been one of my most anticipated for a while now, so I’m just eagerly awaiting the day it comes out so I can finally see it, regardless of the trailer.

The Zone Of Interest opens in select theaters on December 8th.

The Iron Claw

I’m here for sad meathead cinema, man. Pretty wild that a movie about Von Erich family is being put out as a big prestige picture, but hey, you can’t argue with what Sean Durkin is doing here. It looks rock solid, the cast looks terrific, quality production, it looks like a lost went into making this feel authentic to the times. Based on what I’ve been hearing from folks, it seems like there is a quiet but vast audience really excited for this movie, so we might have something of a sleeper hit with this, and that would be pretty exciting. Either way, I’m definitely sold.

The Iron Claw hits theaters on December 22nd.

The Disappearance of Shere Hite

It’s truly wild that, even if some aspects of society have certainly progressed, there are still things that you can always rely on, and that’s people turning on a woman that dares to make them even remotely uncomfortable, either because she dares to encourage coverage from minority critics or daring to call out an abusive yet beloved partner, and so on and so forth, it’s a constant thing unfortunately. I feel like I vaguely know about this woman, but not a lot, and certainly not enough to have an understanding of this disappearance the trailer gets into. It looks super interesting. As usual, I’ve fallen behind on a lot of documentaries, but once I start catching up, I will check this one out.

The Disappearance of Shere Hite will be released in select theaters on November 17th.

Candy Cane Lane

Looks like we got ourselves a Boomerang reunion with Reginald Hudlin and Eddie Murphy. Don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing, I remember liking Boomerang when I was young, but I haven’t seen it in a while, so I don’t know if it holds up at all. Either way, it looks cute, I suppose. It’s definitely the kind of Eddie Murphy movie we got plenty of times during the 2000s, but honestly not as annoying looking. He seems pretty lowkey here, which is odd to see. I doubt I’ll end up watching this unless I hear really, really good things, but I’m glad Murphy is still out there doing what he does best.

Candy Cane Lane will stream exclusively on Amazon Prime Video on December 1st.
