Dune

Uh, sure, it looks good, I guess. I should say that I have not read the book(s?), and my only exposure to this is from the David Lynch film, which I don’t particularly care for, though I do find it weirdly fascinating as a misfire. I don’t really know what I’m looking at here, but it sure it sure is pretty, which is to be expected from Denis Villeneuve, a director that I like, but maybe not as much as a lot of people seem to. I have heard quite a bit of discussion in “the discourse” about how disappointing the lack of Arab representation is since the book draws a lot from Arab and Islamic culture and history. I think that’s valid, but I guess we’ll just have to see how the film turns out. I’m not as hyped as everyone else is, but it looks weird, and I generally like weird, so…yeah, that’s my thoughts on the Dune trailer for ya.

Dune is set to hit theaters on December 18th.

Rebecca

Don’t judge me too harshly, but I only very recently caught up with Alfred Hitchcock’s Rebecca. I’ve been going through various directors, and watching their entire filmographies – the ones I haven’t already seen, at least – and the 1940 film was one of them (shocker, it’s really good). And yes, I’m aware this is less a remake and more another attempt at adapting the Daphne du Maurier novel. The trailer here is pretty solid, though the film looks perhaps a touch too glossy. However, I’m a huge fan of director Ben Wheatley, one of the co-writers Jane Goldman, and the cast is looking pretty top notch as well. The trailer doesn’t do much to push any feeling either more positive or negative, but I am looking forward to this.

Rebecca hits Netflix on October 21st.

The Glorias

Super pumped to see Julie Taymor make another movie after a whole decade. Although, I do have to say this trailer is sloppy as all hell. Like it was put together in a single day. It started off super promising, like it had a personality, and all of a sudden, the music takes a jarring shift into Andra Day’s “Rise Up,” which has become the go-to song for any movie trailer that wants to look important and prestigious. Once the trailer went there, it looked like any generic biopic, which it apparently isn’t from some of the stylistic choices we can see. Not a fan of the trailer, but I’m sure the movie will be pretty good.

The Glorias will be available on Amazon Prime on September 30th.

Yellow Rose

This looks very good. Kinda surprised to see it distributed by a studio as big as Sony considering I hadn’t even heard of this prior to tracking down this trailer. Kind of reminds me, in a sense, of Wild Rose, which I loved. Obviously, there are very different plot elements involved, but they’re both centered around characters in harsh, unforgiving conditions who find solace in their love for country music, which is interesting to me. Also, they both have Rose in the title. I think this has a ton of potential, I’ll be keeping an eye out for it.

Yellow Rose will be released in select theaters on October 9th.

The Comeback Trail

This looks like something that would totally be right up my alley. It’s got a great cast of veteran actors, it’s a comedy about show biz, it takes place in the 70s. However, I’ve seen enough low budget movies to know when it seems like the filmmakers are pushing themselves a touch beyond their reach, and this trailer is giving me all kinds of red flags, and that’s not even taking Zach Braff into consideration. A part of me wants to give this a chance because it’s written and directed by George Gallo, who wrote Midnight Run – a classic – and also wrote and directed 29th Street, which I remembered being quite good. The few other films he’s directed that I’ve seen don’t inspire much confidence, and it doesn’t look like this film has been given enough resources to make it the best version it could possibly be. But then again, it is tempting me with Tommy Lee Jones slapstick, so…I might end up giving this a watch.

The Comeback Trail will open in select theaters on November 13th.
