Drive-Away Dolls

This looks like a ton of fun! I forgot that Ethan Coen was working on his own solo feature after Joel did his with the excellent, haunting adaptation of The Tragedy Of Macbeth. This obviously feels more in tune to what you would expect from a project with the Coen Brothers’ (or *a* Coen brother’s) name on it. It feels more in line with their earlier work together like Raising Arizona, which I am plenty happy to see. Plus, I love Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan, so I’m excited to see how they work together in a story like this. Can’t wait!

Drive-Away Dolls hits theaters on September 22nd.

Priscilla

Always in for whatever Sophia Coppola does, and her tackling this feels so perfect for her sensibilities and interests as a filmmaker. I’m curious how it will touch on the less than pleasant stuff surrounding this relationship, particularly the fact that she was a young teenager when she first met Elvis, a fact that the Elvis biopic basically ignored. But it makes sense for that film, I want to see how this film handles it. I haven’t read Priscilla Presley’s autobiography, so I don’t know exactly what her take on a lot of this stuff is, but I can’t imagine Coppola being particularly precious with source material like that, so I’m very curious about this.

Priscilla opens in theaters on a currently unspecified date in October 2023.

Final Cut

I don’t know. The appeal of something like One Cut Of The Dead was that it was this little movie, from a group of filmmakers that weren’t big names, that came out of nowhere, and blew our collective socks off. Remaking that from a prestigious and well known (at least in film circles) director like Michel Hazanavicius of The Artist and OSS 117 fame, while still trying to capture that scrappy energy and aesthetic feels insincere to me. I know this was filmed pretty early during COVID, so the limitations certainly work in favor of the film’s very modest scope, but I don’t know, I’m not feeling it. You can’t pull off magic like that twice, but if the word is good, I might give it a look.

Final Cut will be released in select theaters on July 14th.

The Beanie Bubble

OK, it’s starting to get a little ridiculous with all these product based movies that have somehow been released all during this year. Not to say this looks terrible, but it’s starting to get too familiar, and I don’t see what this film is bringing fresh to the table like what something like BlackBerry did. I am intrigued by Zach Galifianakis’ performance here, it does look different from everything else he’s done before, but will that be enough? Can the film stand enough on its own? I suppose we’ll find out, I’ll give it a chance.

The Beanie Bubble opens in selecting theaters on July 21st before streaming exclusively on Apple TV+ on July 28th.

Brother

This looks really good. I don’t think I’ve seen anything from Clement Virgo, but this is making me want to check out his filmography. I love the vibe, like a little bit of Barry Jenkins, a little bit of Terrence Malick, but also with its own little touches. The story certainly sounds engrossing, and the collection of actors here seem strong. This is one I will keep an eye out for.

Brother hits select theaters and VOD platforms on August 4th.

Futurama

Yes, yes, 100% yes. I’ve been excited for this since they first announced it, then disappointed when it seemed like John DiMaggio wasn’t coming back, then excited again when they worked it out, and got him back on board. Futurama is one of my all-time favorites, and while the Comedy Central revival was a bit hit-and-miss, the hits felt like classic Futurama, so if this new season can match that batting average, I know we’re in for a good time.

The new season of Futurama premieres on Hulu starting July 24th.
