Cruella

Amazing. Did Disney just go full Joker with this? I had no idea what to expect with this project, and honestly, I’m still unsure of what exactly they’re going for, but whatever it is, I think I’m in. First off, I love that they seem to be committing to the idea of Cruella being a straight up villain, even if it wouldn’t surprise me if they bring some elements to make us at least empathize with her to some degree. One thing that kind of amuses me is the fact that I cannot fathom any child looking at this trailer and wanting to see it. Nothing about this seems remotely interested in selling this to kids, and I’m curious if the film itself is like that. I doubt they’ll go really dark, but hey, it’s been a while since I’ve been this curious about one of these live action Disney movies. Keeping my fingers crossed on this one.

Cruella hits theaters on May 28th.

Mortal Kombat

Look, I’m not super familiar with the games, and my memory of the 1995 movie is hazy at best. I’m not invested in this as an adaptation, but I have been excited for this as a bloody as all hell martial arts extravaganza, which seems to have been a goal for the filmmakers, especially considering some of the cast members here. I don’t know how faithful this is, but I think it looks super promising. It looks over-the-top in all the right ways, and the action looks really fun. I can’t wait to see what they got in store, and how far they’re willing to go with these kills. I’m very excited for this.

Mortal Kombat will open in theaters and be available on HBO Max for 31 days starting April 16th.

Mare Of Easttown

I’m really into this. I haven’t heard of this prior to watching the trailer, but it is a limited series, seven episodes, and a lot of my interest is mostly rooted in the people involved. It is created and written by Brad Ingelsby, who has writing credits on Out Of The Furnace, Run All Night, and The Way Back, and it’s directed by Craig Zobel, who did Compliance, Z For Zachariah, and The Hunt. I don’t necessarily love everything these guys have done prior, but the ones I liked I really, really liked, and I’m curious to see how they do working together on a miniseries and having the time to flesh out all their characters and ideas. Plus, Kate Winslet as a weary detective? Hell yeah, count me in.

Mare Of Easttown will premiere on HBO and HBO Max on April 18th.

Rose Plays Julie

Wow, where did this come from? I love it when I put together these Trailer Talks, and I just stumble onto something I haven’t heard of and it immediately grabs my interest. The trailer kind of plays it a bit coy with the story, but it is apparently about an adopted girl seeking out her birth mother, who seems to have no desire to meet her, and Aidan Gillen is playing the biological father, and…well…looks like it isn’t going to be the most pleasant family reunion. I like the idea behind it, and the filmmaking from writer/director duo, Joe Lawlor and Christine Molloy, looks tense as hell. Consider me intrigued.

Rose Plays Julie opens in virtual cinemas and VOD platforms on March 19th.

Lucky

Well, this certainly looks bananas. It’s not quite a time loop movie, but it incorporates elements of that with the man mysteriously reappearing. It’s far more surreal than any slasher movie I’ve seen recently, and I’m really intrigued by it. I definitely want to see how this all pays off, and who knows, maybe it won’t be satisfying, or maybe it get too cerebral for its own good, but I like to see horror films experiment with the form, and this looks like something that will ultimately be worth looking into.

Lucky hits Shudder on March 4th.

Come True

This definitely looks creepy. I was wondering for a while if this had anything to do with sleep paralysis, which is prime material for a horror film, but it doesn’t seem like it is. I haven’t seen Our House, which is the film that put filmmaker, Anthony Scott Burns, on the map, at least in terms of the indie scene, but it was one I heard some decent things about. I do recall seeing the trailer for it, and it’s fascinating that both these movies are horror films that heavily involve scientific experiments. Don’t have much else to say about this, but it does look compelling.

Come True opens in select theaters and VOD platforms on March 12th.
