Clerks III

I find it weird that this is the approach that Kevin Smith is taking with the new Clerks because there was an indie movie back in 2019 that was literally about the making of Clerks, and Kevin Smith was a part of it as a bit role. But granted, that was before Smith’s great awakening following his heart attack, which is clearly an inspiration here, so I’ll go with it. I know a lot of folks, outside of Smith’s hardcore following, has largely given up on him, but I can’t help it, I got a soft spot for his voice and these characters. I’m actually pretty excited to see this.

Clerks III hits theaters via Fathom Events on September 13 & 15.

Amsterdam

I hesitate to get excited for anything by David O’Russell, not just because I feel he’s left behind a lot of the idiosyncrasies from his early work in favor for Scorcese-lite dramedies that tend to be cool in the moment yet forgettable afterwards, but also because he’s a notorious a-hole who also happened to have grope his niece. So, like I usually do for folk I don’t want to actively support, I’m not gonna review this one. I might still see it, thankfully I don’t often pay for movies anymore, it does look pretty fun after all, but even if I do enjoy it, you probably won’t hear about it.

Amsterdam opens in theaters on November 4th.

The Woman King

Gina Prince-Bythewood has not missed yet, and I doubt she will with this. This looks awesome, and as much I dug The Old Guard, I think the action here looks a hell of a lot better. I hope she was given the resources to go full Braveheart with this. The cast looks great, the sets, costumes, all look top notch, and I can’t wait to hear Terence Blanchard’s score. I was certainly curious about this when I heard of it, but now after seeing the trailer, I’m really looking forward to this.

The Woman King hits theaters on September 16th.

Emily The Criminal

Pretty silly title for an otherwise serious movie. I’m always throwing a little side-eye when I see a trailer that looks this intriguing, but it’s from a distributor like Vertical Entertainment, but I guess since they’re working with Roadside Flix, it’s maybe got a fighting chance. I think this looks great. I’ve lowkey always wanted to see Aubrey Plaza play a lead in a crime thriller/action film, and this is close enough. Not sure why, but her whole vibe here is reminding me of Carrie Coon. Anyways, I’ll definitely try to check this out, it definitely has potential to be something really interesting.

Emily The Criminal opens in theaters on August 12th.

Wedding Season

Man, Suraj Sharma comes out of the gate starring in an Oscar winning Ang Lee movie, and then gets to be in only a handful of movies since. His last movie was in 2019. I wonder why. Anyways, this looks fine, I guess. Netflix has pretty much nailed the early 2000s rom-com vibe, and they’ve made so many that I’ve failed to catch up on all of them. I don’t know if I’ll get around to this one, but it’s cool to see one made with a desi perspective, even if the director is a white dude.

Wedding Season hits Netflix on August 4th.

See How They Run

OK, I was already digging this trailer’s vibe just with the promise of a quirky whodunnit with Sam Rockwell and Saoirse Ronan as the investigators, but when Harris Dickinson shows up as Richard Attenborough, I was so delighted. What a cool thing to throw into something like this. I’m glad to see this resurgence of the whodunnit subgenre. I don’t know who this director Tom George is, apparently did a couple BBC shows, and that’s about it, but he’s clearly got a nice eye for aesthetics and a wacky energy. Can’t wait for this.

See How They Run will open in select theaters starting September 30th.
