Bombshell
This a really well put together teaser, and yes, the makeup used on Charlize Theron to make her look like Megyn Kelly (which wouldn’t even feel like much of a stretch even without it) is jaw dropping. Jay Roach being the director is perhaps my one trepidation. He’s mostly known for his comedies like the Austin Powers series, Meet The Parents, etc, that isn’t a problem, but his dramas – many of which are often about politics, which is interesting – just don’t tend to be all that interesting. They have a polish, reasonably well made, and the performances are usually solid, but there’s rarely any meat on their bones. I wasn’t too crazy about his last film, Trumbo, but I would love to see him prove me wrong with this one, especially considering how intriguing the material is.
Bombshell will hit theaters on December 20th.
Antlers
To continue my theme with movies that have my interest despite being made by filmmakers I’m typically not fond of – this one is from Scott Cooper, whose movies I feel like I should enjoy more since they’re very much mature films for mature audiences. My issue with his movies is that they often try way too hard to be serious minded fare, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it often makes for a dull, shallow, and occasionally miserable experience. However, his talents might actually prove beneficial with this kind of horror material, especially with Guillermo del Toro serving as a producer. I like what I see here, and I’m very much into the dark fairy tale vibe. Once again, I’d like to see my previously established perception of the director shattered with this, so I’ll keep my fingers crossed on this.
The release date for Antlers has not been announced yet, but it will open in theaters on 2020.
The Report
I heard a lot of great things about this when it premiered at Sundance, and I’ve been excited about it since. I love me a good political thriller, I love me an Adam Driver, and Annette Bening is a national treasure. This story is intriguing, and I’ve been wondering when we’d see a movie that’s directly about this particular subject matter. It certainly looks like it’s up to the task, and I hope it lives up to what people have been saying about it.
The Report will open in select theaters November 15th, and will be available on Amazon Prime Video November 29th.
Underwater
Could be fun schlock, I suppose. It does have a collection of really cool and talented actors, and also T.J. Miller. Unlike other films like this, this looks like it had a decent budget behind it, so it certainly looks good for the kind of movie it is. I wouldn’t say this excites me in any way, but I am curious to see this once it comes out.
Underwater opens in theaters on January 10th, 2020.
The Day Shall Come
Four Lions is not only one of the best comedies to come out in the 21st century, I would say it’s one of the best films of the century period. It’s a brilliant satire from Chris Morris that you should totally seek out if you haven’t seen it already. He hasn’t made a new film since 2010, so I’ve been highly anticipating this when I heard it was first announced. Now, having seen the trailer, I’m still very excited. This looks like it has a lot of what I loved about Four Lions, and I hope it delivers. Seriously, though – watch Four Lions.
The Day Shall Come will hit theaters and VOD platforms on September 27th.
Marriage Story
I’m including both versions of the trailer because it’s a cool gimmick. Reminds of what they did with The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby several years back, although, unlike those movies, where they released three separate movies (one from the guy’s perspective, one from the girl’s, and the third being a combination), this is just one movie from Noah Baumbach. He’s a good filmmaker, reliable to deliver interesting, human stories. This looks no different, I’m totally sold on it.
The release date for Marriage Story hasn’t been announced yet, but it will hit select theaters and Netflix this fall.
