At Eternity’s Gate
This looks stunning, which shouldn’t be much of a surprise since it’s directed by Julian Schnabel, who is also a painter. The cast also looks wonderful. I was always fascinated by Vincent van Gogh, I remember reading Lust For Life in high school, and it touches on so many details of his life and who he was. This definitely looks like something very interesting, although I am a tad worried that it might romanticize mental illness because of how it contributed to his art, but I’ll wait until I see the thing before I say anything more about that. It does look very good.

I don’t think I’ve ever considered myself a fan of Paul Greengrass, but I have admired much of his work. His new film, notably his first with Netflix, is a docudrama about the 2011 attacks in Norway that took the lives of 77 people, which was orchestrated by a right-wing extremist. It looks about as harrowing as you’d think, and it definitely looks like Greengrass firing on all cylinders, which is definitely a nice change of pace from the likes of Jason Bourne. It looks top notch, and I find that his work that revolves around true events bring the best out of him, given his journalistic roots, so this definitely has my attention.
22 July will hit theaters and Netflix on October 10th.
Where Hands Touch
Hmm…I don’t know how to feel about this. On one hand, Amma Asante is an extraordinary filmmaker who makes thoughtful, complex films that offer an interesting perspective that many prestige dramas, usually directed by white men, simply don’t have. On the other, the idea of having a love story between a biracial teen and a Hitler Youth member is…questionable, especially for the times we’re living in. My inner optimist says that she is able to bring a level of nuance to the story that will manage to work in its favor, but it’s hard to tell. I’m hoping for the best, but I’ll keep my expectations in check.

Anna And The Apocalypse
Yeah, alright, zombie mayhem meets musical extravaganza? Sure, I’ve heard weirder setups! I remember hearing some really good word-of-mouth from its festival release (I believe) about a year ago, so I’m glad this is finally getting a release. It looks like it could be a lot of fun. Hopefully, it’s not one of those smug indies that seem to pat itself on the back for being as knowingly weird as it is, but the buzz around this doesn’t seem to suggest that. This is something you should keep on your radar, folks.
Anna And The Apocalypse will play in select theaters on November 30th.
Instant Family
This looks fine, I suppose. Rose Byrne has great comedic timing, and Wahlberg looks solid enough. After all, he is reuniting with Daddy’s Home 1 & 2 helmer, Sean Anders. It just looks like one of these cute but broad and inoffensive comedies that may not be “bad,” but rarely stick with you after seeing it. It could be alright, but there’s not a lot you can expect from a movie like this, except maybe the importance of adoption perhaps.
Instant Family will hit theaters on November 16th.
My Dinner With Hervé
This is a passion project from Peter Dinklage who has been working on this with former journalist and filmmaker, Sacha Gervasi, since 2012 based on Gervasi’s 1993 interviews with Hervé Villechaize. It certainly looks like a compelling dive into his mind, and I’ve enjoyed everything that Gervasi has made before. Anvil! The Story of Anvil is legit great, and while Hitchcock wasn’t particularly deep, it was a fun look at the filming of Psycho. Plus, it’s cool to see Peter Dinklage take the lead.
My Dinner With Hervé will premiere on HBO on October 20th.
The Favourite
I already covered the teaser a while ago, and since this isn’t all that different in presentation, I don’t have much to add. The movie looks delightful and funny and weird. I can’t wait to see it.
The Favourite will be released in theaters November 23rd.
Halloween
Ditto everything I just said about The Favourite. I think I like this better than the last trailer, and I really liked the last trailer. It’s cool to have a good old fashioned slasher, and it seems like the folks involved are putting in 110%. So, yeah, Halloween can’t come fast enough.
