Ammonite
This looks very lovely, and very well done. I’ve been meaning to see God’s Own Country since it came out a couple years ago, and this will definitely give me that push to check it out. However, I do have some minor concerns. Is anyone else bothered by the age gap? There’s almost two decades in between Winslet and Ronan. What’s weird is that Ronan’s character in real life is a whole 11 years older! I’m sure they’ll do a good job though. Also, based on a little research, it seems like there was no evidence of any kind of love affair between these two women. I’m not sure how I feel about reinventing real figures like this. In less delicate hands, this kind of change could frame someone like Mary Anning as not interesting enough for her contributions to her field unless there was a romance involved. But based on what I heard about God’s Own Country, Francis Lee isn’t that kind of filmmaker, so I’ll remain cautiously optimistic.
Ammonite will be released in theaters on November 13th.
Enola Holmes
Wow, that looks wild! A+ use of “Celebrity Skin” by Hole. Don’t know why, but when this was announced, I was under the assumption that this Enola character was Sherlock’s daughter, not sister. I also didn’t expect this many fourth wall breaks. This seems like a ton of fun, the cast is great, it’s got some vibrancy and energy, and Daniel Pemberton is doing the score. This wasn’t big on my radar before, but now I’m looking forward to this.
Enola Holmes will hit Netflix on September 23rd.
The Forty-Year-Old Version
I somehow hadn’t even heard of this, but this was very funny. I’m not aware of who Radha Blank is, but apparently, this is loosely based on her own experiences as a playwright. That voice definitely shines through, and I also really like the use of black-and-white here. It makes one hell of a strong impression, that’s for sure. I’ll be keeping an eye out for this one.
The Forty-Year-Old Version will be available on Netflix on October 9th.
Let Him Go
Insert joke about this being a Superman prequel here. Snark aside, this is so up my alley. A dark neo-western largely made up of older stars and character actors. It’s definitely the last thing I would expected from Thomas Bezucha, who up until this has largely directed light comedy-dramas. The trailer is really intense, and out of all the ones on today’s Trailer Talk, I think this one has me the most excited, at least in terms of seemingly fitting into a ton of my own personal preferences.
Let Him Go hits theaters on November 6th.
12 Hour Shift
Looks gnarly as hell. I like it. This is another one I haven’t heard much about until the trailer came out. This is the second feature from Bea Grant, and I hadn’t seen her first film, Best Friends Forever, but I love me some genre nastiness. So, this is one I’m certainly putting on my radar.
12 Hour Shift will be released on VOD platforms on October 2nd.
Love, Guaranteed
This is a pretty neat premise for a rom-com, even if it all ends up going through the same, familiar beats anyway because…that’s just how this genre goes. It looks nice, though. Damon Wayans Jr. and Rachael Leigh Cook look like they’re having a ton of fun together, I feel like I haven’t seen Heather Graham in forever. Netflix has had a solid run of these wildly cheesy rom-coms, and of the ones I’ve seen, I’ve really enjoyed them. And I don’t see how this might stray from what I’ve seen from Netflix so far. I do wish they did a text card reading: From The Director Of Daredevil, Ghost Rider, and Killing Season. That would’ve been funny.
