Ad Astra

Yep. Give it to me. Give me my space movie. I want it. That’s it. Joking aside, I admittedly wasn’t necessarily the biggest fan of James Gray’s last film, The Lost City of Z, but I recognize that it’s a really accomplished piece of work that feels like a long lost 70s Old Hollywood movie, and his work in bringing that to life had nothing to do with my issues with that film. I’m curious if he’ll bring that same kinda vibe to this, but either way, I’m sold.

Ad Astra will be released in theaters on September 20th.

Ford V Ferrari

Oh, hell yes. I like the looks of this. It’s like the ultimate watch-with-your-dad movie ever. I’m not particularly aware of this story, so this will be pretty interesting even though I’m not much of a gearhead at all. I do like James Mangold a lot, and these actors are obviously great, so I got a lot of faith that this will turn out pretty good. By the way, has everyone already made the “Dawn of Justice” joke with the title? I didn’t check.

Ford v Ferrari will hit theaters on November 15th.

Luce

This looks intense, and it has me hooked. This must’ve gotten lost in the shuffle as I was reading about the recent Sundance hits, but I really like the idea behind this, and it can provide some ample opportunity for compelling and smart commentary. I can see something like this falling under the radar, especially as we reach the end of the summer movie season, but I am very excited to see this.

Luce will release in theaters on August 2nd.

Onward

It’s a pretty straightforward teaser, but I really like what I see. Apparently, Pixar is going to focus on some more original material post-Toy Story 4, which makes me really happy. I like the setup here, and it seems far more promising than other projects that involve fantasy characters in a modern setting *cough* Bright *cough*. I’m definitely excited to see how this turns out.

Onward opens in theaters on March 6th, 2020.

The Kitchen

The comic this is based on is really good, so I have some high hopes for this. I love the casting, and it seems like Andrea Berloff is handling the material well as a first time director. I don’t really have much else to say about this. It looks cool, seems like it has a solid grasp on the source material, and the three leads are looking great together. I can’t wait.

The Kitchen will be released in theaters on August 9th.

Cold Blood

So…is there a reason Jean Reno kinda disappeared from Hollywood movies? Like, he was such a staple in a ton of movies I watched from the mid-to-late 90s, and I vividly remember really enjoying his distinct screen presence. The dude is cool. But once the 2000s came, he only started showing up here and there. Maybe he just wanted to be in more French projects. Anyway, this looks…pretty whatever. I just wanted an excuse to talk about Jean Reno for a bit.

Cold Blood hits select theaters and VOD platforms on July 5th.

Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark

I already talked about my excitement for this with the previous teaser, so I don’t have much else to add here. But man, this does look really cool. We don’t really get scary movies aimed at younger audiences anymore, so I’m hoping this becomes a success so filmmakers can see more potential in creating stories that can be frightening, but still appeal to a family demographic. It’s a tricky balance, but I have a feeling these guys will nail it.

Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark will open in theaters on August 9th.
