Who saw this coming?

So, Netflix has just made the announcement that they have made an multi-year agreement with President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama in which they will produce content for the streaming service such as a scripted series, unscripted series, docu-series, documentaries and features through their recently established Higher Ground Productions.

President Obama had this to say in the press release:

“One of the simple joys of our time in public service was getting to meet so many fascinating people from all walks of life, and to help them share their experiences with a wider audience. That’s why Michelle and I are so excited to partner with Netflix – we hope to cultivate and curate the talented, inspiring, creative voices who are able to promote greater empathy and understanding between peoples, and help them share their stories with the entire world.”

So, yeah, this is really interesting. And while the jokes about Obama and Biden doing a buddy cop movie are hilarious, that is probably not going to be the kind of content they want to deliver. The projects will likely revolve around issues that they hold dear, and will work with filmmakers to bring stories about those issues to life.

I’m curious how early this is in terms of development. Did they just recently sign this? Or was it done a while ago and are just getting people interested now in preparation for upcoming announcements of future projects? Do they have filmmakers in mind? Will they seek out up-and-coming filmmakers?

There’s definitely lots of questions, since this is such a big deal, and I’m sure we’ll get our answers soon. We’ll keep you updated as we find out more.
