Interesting news from Variety last night, it looks like Matt Reeves has found his star for The Batman in Robert Pattinson, or at least, once he makes all the necessary signatures since it’s not technically a done deal yet. But all signs are pointing to him taking on the role, beating out people like Armie Hammer, Nicholas Hoult and Aaron Taylor-Johnson (according to the Hollywood Reporter), which I’m sure is going to have people talking.

Pattinson is obviously most well known for his work in the Twilight franchise, but since then he’s grown into one of the most compelling actors working today. I still have a feeling a vast majority of mainstream moviegoers will unfairly judge him for those movies, and if you’re one of those, I highly suggest you check out films like Good Time, The Rover, Damsel, The Lost City of Z (which I’m not even super crazy about, but he’s great in it), and I hear he’s fantastic in High Life, which might still be playing in select theaters.

I actually dig this casting quite a bit. I’ve seen his name thrown around a few fan-casts online, and I think he works. I feel like he can bring a sort of weirdo vibe to the character similar to what Michael Keaton does in the 1989 Batman film, the kind of performance where you can tell something is up with the wiring in his head. I think Pattinson could nail that.

And granted, that’s just me assuming things. Not much is known right now about what Matt Reeves will be doing for this new take on the Caped Crusader. Apparently, there will be multiple villains, and it will lean harder on Batman’s whole detective side than ever before, which is really cool. While I wasn’t the biggest fan of the recent Planet Of The Apes films, I do think Reeves is a talented filmmaker, and I’m curious to see what he does with this character.

Along with some smaller projects like The Lighthouse, The King, The Devil Waiting All The Time, Waiting For The Barbarians, the next really big project that Pattinson is attached to is the new film from former Batman helmer, Christopher Nolan, a currently untitled blockbuster, which will open in theaters on July 17th, 2020. The Batman is expected to enter principal photography in either late 2019 or early 2020.

The Batman is currently scheduled to hit theaters on June 25th, 2021.
