90’s extreme comic fans rejoice!
It looks like Todd McFarlane’s Spawn has found its star, according to Deadline, which just recently came out with a report saying that Jamie Foxx will star in the titular role.
I don’t have much familiarity with the comic, but I am with the 1997 film, and from the looks of it, McFarlane is essentially reclaiming his Image Comics icon, giving him the film he deserves.
The film, which is written and directed by McFarlane (making it his official debut in feature length filmmaking), is going to be a Blumhouse production with a fairly low budget ranging from $10-12 million, and expected to be a hard R. Something that the article states is that McFarlane is likely not going to tell an origin story, and Spawn will be a man of very few words.
This is shaping up to be something quite interesting, especially compared to most other comic book movies out there. I’m curious how the low budget will affect some of the more outrageous elements of the comic that I have seen, but it might seem like McFarlane has a solid angle that he’s working on here. Here is some of what he had to say about the project and potential sequels:
“We’ll eventually do some of the background if we make a trilogy, but that’s not this first movie. The first movie is just saying, do you believe? And if you believe than that’s good because I’m hoping to take you for a long ride with this franchise.”
This is something that Jamie Foxx has been wanting to do for a while, so I’m hoping to see the same level of passion from the filmmakers translated on screen, whatever this may end up being. Like I said, I haven’t read the comics, so I don’t really know what to expect. Hopefully, it will be something refreshing.
