Trailer Talk: Wendell & Wild, Dead For A Dollar, and more!

Wendell & Wild

Yes, I’ve been incredible excited to see this ever since it was announced. So happy that we finally have some footage. This looks awesome, not surprising given the amazing skills of Henry Selick. But with Jordan Peele involved, that PG-13 rating, it looks like they aren’t gonna hold back too much. It’ll be great to see they use this aesthetic in making a horror movie geared towards older kids. Can’t wait to see it.

Wendell & Wild will hit Netflix on October 28th.

Dead For A Dollar

Walter Hill is a legend, so it’s a bit sad to see his latest being distributed by a lesser company like Quiver, and also looking like he shot the film on the cheapest digital camera they could find. I’m sure when I see the actual movie, I’ll get used to the look, but the trailer isn’t doing it any favors, a genre like the western simply requires a richer visual aesthetic, otherwise it just looks like people playing dress up. That said, the story here is intriguing, the actors are all stellar, and Hill is a filmmaker who I don’t think misses all that much, his last film notwithstanding. So, I’m still looking forward to this.

Dead For A Dollar will open in select theaters on September 30th.

Armageddon Time

I generally like James Gray, I loved his last film Ad Astra, but…man, I don’t know. I’m very weary about films from white filmmakers about race issues, which I didn’t even realize was a major component until seeing this. And that goes especially for stories about white characters learning to empathize and standup for marginalized characters, it’s…I guess you can call it problematic, I honestly just think it’s cringe as all hell, and just not reflective of how we tell stories like this now. I’m still open to the idea of the film being potentially pretty good, Gray is good at what he does, but my excitement has lowered a bit.

Armageddon Time opens in select theaters on October 28th.

Luckiest Girl Alive

This looks intriguing. I hope there’s more to the story than some basic exploration of cancel culture. I like Mila Kunis as an actor, so it’s cool to see her lead a film like this, I hope the role is as meaty as they tease it is. It’s apparently based on a book, and the author, Jessica Knoll, also wrote the script, so it’ll be interesting to see if her talents will translate from one medium to another. I’ll definitely keep my eye out on this.

Luckiest Girl Alive will be released on Netflix on October 7th.

All Quiet On The Western Front

I didn’t realize we were getting a new version of this story. I recall seeing the 1930 version a while ago, and being very impressed with what they were able to accomplish. Obviously with the technology we have available to us, plus the level of realism we’re able to achieve and portray without censorship, I’m curious to see how this will work for today. It certainly looks well made, and I see Daniel Brühl is also featured in this, which is cool. I like a good war movie, so I’m definitely looking forward to this.

All Quiet On The Western Front will open in select theaters starting October 7th before hitting Netflix on October 28th.

Copenhagen Cowboy

Yes, all in on this, hell yeah! Refn is back baby! I adored Too Old To Die Young, and I’ve been eagerly anticipating whatever he wanted to do next. I didn’t realize he was doing a Netflix series until fairly recently, so this is just a treat. I love his style, and man, this trailer oozes it in every frame. I don’t even know what it’s about, but I don’t care, I just wanna see it right now.

Copenhagen Cowboy will premiere on Netflix at a currently unspecified date later this year.
