Watcher

This is the debut feature from Chloe Okuno, who previously did one of the better segments in V/H/S/94. And I gotta say, this is a strong teaser, and this might sound weird, but this doesn’t look like something you’d usually see from IFC. This looks way more polished and slick, as if it’s from one of the big studios or something. I think this looks pretty great. Even if I kinda feel like I can figure out where the story is going, the ride looks very gripping. Plus, I really like Maika Monroe, she’s a great actor, and it’s wild to me that she hasn’t really broken into the mainstream in a big way yet. Unless she’s purposefully choosing smaller projects, which is cool too. Either way, definitely looking forward to this.

Watcher is scheduled to hit theaters on June 3rd.

 

Puss In Boots: The Last Wish

I did not know this was even happening. And I guess I’m not alone on this because even though this trailer has been out since the 15th, there still isn’t a Wikipedia page for this yet (as of me writing this). I honestly don’t remember much of anything from the first Puss In Boots, but I was pleasantly surprised by how fun this trailer seemed. I like the setup, Banderas is great as usual, and I’m fascinated by the subtle yet noticeable change in animation style. Not gonna hold my breath for this or anything, but I’ll definitely be checking this out.

Puss In Boots: The Last Wish hits theaters on September 23rd.

 

Firebird

I feel like I’ve kinda seen this movie plenty of times before, but it still looks very well executed, and it’ll be interesting to see this story in this particular context. This is directed and co-written by an Estonian filmmaker named  Peeter Rebane. I’m not very familiar with him, so not sure what to expect stylistically here, but it does seem well put together. Not much else to comment on, looks solid. Will be keeping an eye out for this.

Firebird opens in theaters on April 29th.

 

The Pentaverate

I’m very much on board with a Mike Myers comeback. And this looks like a cool way to start. While I am annoyed that this is a series and not a film, as long as it’s consistently funny, that’s all that matters, and this trailer did give me a couple chuckles. I like how weird it is, like it’s parodying the style of someone like Dan Brown and his DaVinci Code books. Strange reference point, but hey, it’s original, I’ll give it that. Let’s hope that Myers still has it.

The Pentaverate will stream on Netflix on May 5th.

 

Ms. Marvel

I did read some of Ms. Marvel’s stuff when her books first came out, and I was quite charmed by them. Not sure why they changed the powers other than some similarity to Mr. Fantastic, but even that sounds like a weak excuse. Other than that, this definitely captures the vibe I got from those books I read, and Iman Vellani seems very endearing. I like what I’m seeing here. Hopefully, this won’t have the problems that the other Marvel shows have been having, usually starting out strong and slowly petering out to an underwhelming finale. I’m holding out hope that this one turns out great.

Ms. Marvel will begin streaming on Disney+ starting June 8th.

 

Tokyo Vice

Really wished this had literally anyone else but Ansel Elgort as the lead, but man, everything else about this looks so cool. Also, I can’t resist anything that Michael Mann is involved with, and he’s directing the first episode, so I’m pretty much guaranteeing that I’m watching that, and if it hooks me in, I’ll check out the rest of the show. It does look up my alley, and if it’s half as compelling as this trailer, this could be a ton of fun.

Tokyo Vice will stream on HBO Max on April 7th.
