Trailer Talk: Violent Night, The Wonder, and more!

Violent Night

I love this I love everything about this. I remember finding out about around the time Bullet Train came out cause I wanted to see what 87North Productions had coming in their slate, and I found this. Plus, it’s from the guy who made the Dead Snow movies, which are all a delight. And he brings the best kind of tonal balance for something like this, it has a sense of humor, but not necessarily in a way where it’s laughing at itself. It still presents real stakes and some level of earnestness, and man, David Harbour looks like he’s having the time of his life here. So excited for this.

Violent Night hits theaters on December 2nd.

The Wonder

Interesting. I hadn’t read much into this film, so I was under the impression that it was just your generic period drama, I had no idea there was this potentially spiritual/supernatural element to the whole thing. I’m a lot more intrigued by this.  Sebastián Lelio is a good director, Emma Donoghue is a good writer, and I’m surprised they didn’t mention the co-writer, Alice Birch, who wrote Lady Macbeth, the film that put Florence Pugh on the map. Anyways, this looks really good, very much looking forward to it.

The Wonder hits select theaters in early November before streaming on Netflix on November 16th.

Shotgun Wedding

I think like a lot of people, I only really knew about this because Armie Hammer was originally going to play the role that is now played by Josh Duhamel. I can see why Hammer originally had this given that this is way more action oriented than I think any of us expected. This looks fun to me, there’s definitely opportunities for some fun gags, the actors look game, Jennifer Coolidge with an automatic rifle is an image that I love. I think the trailer gives a little too much, but it still looks pretty decent. Plus, it’s actually rated R.

Shotgun Wedding will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on January 27th, 2023.

Emancipation

I’m usually into whatever Antoine Fuqua has going on, even if not everything he makes is a hit. This looks very different from everything he’s done before, not just in subject matter, but even in its visual aesthetic. It’s so desaturated, it almost looks black-and-white. I’m curious if there’s more to the visual language of the film than what we see here, cause there could be more to it. I’m also glad to see Will Smith in something, I think he’s in a really interesting period in his career now post-Oscar, and it would be the same with or without the slap, where he really can do just about whatever he wants, and I’m curious if it means more projects like this or his usual crowd pleasers. Either way, I think this looks interesting, so I look forward to checking it out.

Emancipation is set to hit select theaters on December 2nd before premiering on Apple TV+ on December 9th.

Causeway

I like the look of this. I feel like there’s been enough time since we’ve last seen Jennifer Lawrence to which I can say that I have missed seeing her, I think she’s a good performer who really commits to her roles. And I think it’s good that she is also coming back with a film that is small, intimate, and not one of these big blockbusters or super hyped up prestige pictures. I think a film like this can really give her, or really any actor, a lot of focus that might be hard to achieve if they have only done major productions for a good chunk of their career. It might not seem like something that will blow my mind, but it looks good, and I’m looking forward to checking it out.

Causeway opens in select theaters and Apple TV+ on November 4th.

Bones And All

Luca Guadagnino’s first foray into horror with the Suspiria remake was not really my thing, even if there’s a lot I appreciate about it, however, this feels more his speed, while also tapping into the kind of things they were trying to do with that remake on a thematic level,  and I’m really digging the vibe this is going for. It’s like part modern, part throwback, part romance, part horror, then you got Mark Rylance going buckwild, which is always a delight to see, I’m also curious if any of the music we heard here is from the Reznor/Ross score. Lots to look forward to with this. Can’t wait.

Bones And All opens in theaters on November 23rd.
