Venom
I try to limit entries to one teaser and one trailer per movie, but since I didn’t cover the original teaser for Venom, and the trailer that I did cover is really more of a better teaser than anything else, I figured I’d give this new one a look. And frankly, my opinion on it hasn’t changed one bit. Sorry, this look very not great. I was somewhat amused at what seems like Tom Hardy channeling his inner Christopher Walken, but by the time Venom calls somebody a “turd,” well…you kinda lost me. I would love for this to be a nice surprise, I’m just not convinced it will be one at this point in time. But I was never a huge fan of this character to begin with, and I hope those who are fans are at least happy with it.
Venom will hit theaters on October 5th.
If Beale Street Could Talk
What a stunning teaser. If Moonlight and the footage we see here is of any indication, it pretty much cements that writer/director, Barry Jenkins, is truly unlike any other filmmaker working in America right now, bringing a specific artistry that is typically found in foreign films, especially the often compared Wong Kar Wai. Clever move to release the trailer on James Baldwin’s birthday since it is based on his 1974 novel. I haven’t read the book, but the brief summary I saw of it certainly sounds compelling, though, I am curious if it will experience a certain amount of blow back considering it deals in something that is a very hot button issue right now. I’m being vague on purpose, you can see for yourself. But that aside, I’m all in for anything Jenkins does, so I’m excited.
If Beale Street Could Talk will be released in theaters on November 30th.
Bad Reputation
This doesn’t look like it will be doing anything radical in terms of documentary filmmaking, but Joan Jett is an artist that left a huge impression on me since I was very young, so I’m hoping that – at the very least – this provides some insight into her career and her life that might be so well known. There’s not much else to say about it, but I do hope it’s good.
Bad Reputation will be released in theaters and VOD platforms on September 28th.
Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich
I love all kinds of horror, but Puppet Master was one of those properties that I just never got around to. I haven’t seen any of the *checks Wikipedia* 12?!!?!? There’s 12 of these?!?! So, anyway, thankfully, it seems like this is meant to be a full blown reboot, so hopefully you don’t need to have any prior knowledge going into it. Plus, it’s written by S. Craig Zahler, who you might know as the guy who made Bone Tomahawk and Brawl In Cell Block 99, which is…interesting. I honestly don’t know what to really expect here, but I like the cast, and I’m all up for a no-nonsense gore show.
Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich will hit select theaters and VOD platforms on August 17th
Love, Gilda
Yeah, another documentary about a female pioneer in a career that is typically considered a boy’s club, except this time it’s in the world of TV comedy. Since Gilda Radner was before my time, I honestly don’t know a lot about her beyond the few SNL sketches I’ve seen online, and reading about her relationship with Gene Wilder. Even not knowing much, the trailer does a good job at contextualizing who she was and the impact she had. It even made me a bit teary eyed. This is one I’m definitely keeping an eye out for.
Love, Gilda will be released in theaters on September 21st.
Jungle Cruise
Yeah, this isn’t a trailer, or even a teaser. I just thought it was cute. They did a similar thing with The Last Jedi, and that was fun glimpse to see. I know nothing about the Disney ride, and all I know about the movie is that it’s directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, which is awesome, and it’s written by Glenn Ficarra, John Requa, and Michael Green, three folks who have done work that I’ve really enjoyed before, so whatever this ends up being, I’m hoping for the best.
Jungle Cruise is scheduled for release on October 11, 2019.
