Trailer Talk: Unhinged, Shirley, and more!

Unhinged

This looks very silly. I can’t wait to see it. Why the hell is Russell Crowe in this? Is he really at that stage where he’ll start appearing in junky, low budget b-action movies? And don’t get me wrong, this ain’t a complain from my part. This looks like fun. Thoroughly preposterous, but fun. That Nirvana cover is pretty trash though.

Unhinged is somehow going to hit theaters on July 1st.

The King Of Staten Island

Since Big Time Adolescence, I kinda familiarized myself with Pete Davidson and his brand of humor, and I like the cut of his jib, I think he has potential as a lead. So, yeah, I’m definitely interested in this, especially because much of it is based on his own experiences. Plus, I generally like Judd Apatow’s movies, and this is a fantastic ensemble here, I mean, Marisa Tomei, Bill Burr, Moises Arias, Bel Powley, Steve Buscemi, Pamela Adlon? That is a winning cast from top to bottom. I am really looking forward to this.

The King Of Staten Island will hit VOD platforms on June 12th.

Shirley

I’ve actually seen this already, so keep an eye out for my review when it hits the site on Friday, June 5th. But if you don’t know, it’s from filmmaker Josephine Decker, who is a rising figure in the indie scene, especially after her last film, Madeline’s Madeline. Elisabeth Moss plays the author Shirley Jackson in a fictional, psychosexual Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf-esque setup. I won’t give away my thoughts on it here, but I will say if you like moody, evocative, and ethereal character studies, this is one that should be on your radar.

Shirley will be available on VOD platforms on June 5th.

End of Sentence

John Hawkes and Logan Lerman are two very good actors, and I can certainly see what would attract them to a film like this. However, I can’t say I’m all that intrigued here. I’ve seen this scenario plenty of times before, I’ve seen these dynamics play out plenty of times already, and while I’m sure the actors will bring their A-game, I don’t see what’s particularly fresh about this kind of father-son story. I don’t think it will even be bad or anything, maybe there’s more to it that the trailer’s hiding, but it isn’t really selling me.

End Of Sentence will be released on VOD platforms on May 29th.

Lovecraft Country

I meant to include this in last week’s Trailer Talk, but forgot. Anyway, this looks cool. Utilizing H.P. Lovecraft’s racist undertones to explore about racism in the style of a Lovecraftian horror story is one of those “how come nobody has ever done this before” ideas. I’m excited. Also, Jonathan Majors gave one of my favorite performances last year in the wonderful The Last Black Man In San Francisco, which you should absolutely check out. And I’m very pumped to see more Jurnee Smollett-Bell after her impressive turn in Birds Of Prey earlier this year. I’m super picky with the shows I watch, but this is one that I will definitely check out.

Lovecraft Country will premiere on HBO on a currently unspecified date in August.
