Trailer Talk: Triangle Of Sadness, The Menu, and more!

Triangle Of Sadness

I’ve been really digging the works of Ruben Östlund ever since I saw Force Majeure. He has a very unique and singular sense of humor that is about as wild as it is biting in its commentary. The cast here is terrific, I like the way the framing utilizes the movement and positioning of the ship. It looks like a pretty good time all around, and I’m curious how far this will lean on the whole gross-out element. Either way, very much looking forward to this. Can’t wait to see it.

Triangle Of Sadness opens in theaters on October 7th.

The Menu

This is an interesting case into why a film like this looks not quite as interesting as Triangle Of Sadness, which seems to share the sly satirical sense of humor, and examination of class dynamics. I didn’t find this one as funny, nor does the story seem as interesting, veering closer into more metaphorical territory than the often painful, if slightly exaggerated, realism of Östlund’s film. Granted, I’m basing all this on a trailer, which might not even reflect the nature of the film itself. I just found it interesting we’re getting two of these kinds of movies within a relatively short period of time from one another. I do hope it’s good, but I can’t say I’m sold by the trailer, despite the cast.

The Menu hits theaters on November 18th.

The Banshees Of Inisherin

I really enjoy Martin McDonagh’s particular brand of dark comedy. While there are criticisms regarding his previous films Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri that I agree with, I did like it overall. Though I think it also reached a point for him where he was biting off a bit more than he can chew. This definitely looks more his speed, something much smaller and intimate. Plus, when you got the return of Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson reuniting after In Bruges, that’s just awesome. Can’t wait for this.

The Banshees Of Inisherin opens in theaters on October 21st.

Do Revenge

I like the whole Strangers On A Train vibe this premise has. It’s interesting to see that kind of scenario play out in a high school setting. Although, I should say that if the Camila Mendes character is getting back at that dude because he spread nudes of her or something of that nature, wouldn’t it be easy to just have him arrested for possession of child pornography? I’ve heard about situations like that happening in real life. But anyway, this is a cool setup, and I’m happy to see Maya Hawke here as well. This has a lot of potential, and if it hits, it could be something really cool.

Do Revenge hits Netflix on September 16th.

The Good House

Man, I love the idea of seeing Sigourney Weaver being the lead of a film, which I don’t think she has been for some time. But…I don’t know about this. First, there’s the New England accent, which only appears whenever she says the word “Boston,” then there’s the awkwardly saged fourth-wall breaking, and the general TV sitcom aesthetic to the whole thing that makes this look super cheap. I also find it weird that the trailer keeps implying that Weaver’s character is this sort of self-destructive, possible addict or something, but won’t tell us what it is, so the whole trailer makes it look like everyone’s gaslighting her into thinking she’s been causing them all this pain. Odd. Doesn’t look bad necessarily, but I’m not gonna hold my breath for this. I hope it’s good though.

The Good House will be released in theaters on September 30th.

Catherine Called Birdy

This actually looks really good. I didn’t even realize Lena Dunham had a second film coming out this year, but this has me really intrigued. I haven’t been aware of this book, so I didn’t know what kind of vibe it would be going in, but it’s quite funny, I like Bella Ramsey as a performer, and I’m just happy that this actually looks like a movie, they clearly didn’t skimp too much on the productions design. It’s cool to see a story like this from a young girl’s perspective, we don’t really get stories from this era like that. I’m pleasantly surprised, I’ll definitely be looking forward to this.

Catherine Called Birdy opens in select theaters on September 23rd before being available to steam on Amazon Prime Video on October 7th.
