Together

Yeah, this isn’t doing much for me. You would have to do something really clever in telling a story that took place during the lockdown to get me interested. It’s not that it looks terrible, I just don’t see much of the appeal. There’s definitely good people behind this, and James McAvoy and Sharon Horgan both look great in this, but there’s not an interesting enough hook here for me. And it’s not even the whole “no movies about the pandemic” thing that I’ve seen from a few folks, this simply isn’t intriguing me.

Together hits theaters on August 27th.

Cinderella

I swear, this is a movie that I keep forgetting is a thing. I will say, it’s a lot stranger than I anticipated. I’m trying to figure out what exactly the pitch could have been. It’s anachronistic, but not too modernized. The songs feel less Broadway and more top 100, and it’s doing that tacky self-aware stuff that even the Disney live-action films are full of. I’m sure Ms. Cabelo is very talented, I’m not aware of her work, but the involvement of Kay Cannon, who wrote and directed the lovely Blockers a couple years back, so that’s a promising element. But the trailer itself isn’t giving me much.

Cinderella will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on September 3rd.

House Of Gucci

Just a little over a month after The Last Duel, we’re getting our second Ridley Scott flick, love that dude’s energy. I gotta say though, just as a trailer, the way they incorporated Blondie’s “Heart Of Glass” in the second half, when the intensity picked up, was awkward as all hell. Zero rhythm. Other than that, the film itself looks like a blast. Not sure why they couldn’t pick any character actor over Jared Leto, but whatever. Still looks great, and enjoyable. Feels more in line with the vibe of something like All The Money In The World, which I thought was fantastic. Can’t wait to see it.

House Of Gucci opens in theaters on November 24th.

We Need To Do Something

I want to be excited for this, but I’ve been tricked by movies like these before. Presenting a cool scenario with lots of potential only to go hard on the metaphor angle, and not really exploring much of interest beyond that. You know, the genre film that seems embarrassed to be a genre film.. There’s a balance to be had for sure, and who knows, maybe the film itself will be great, it’s just hard to say with just the trailer. But I dig Pat Healy, and I’ve liked Sierra McCormick in everything I’ve seen her in, especially The Vast Of Night. I’ll keep an eye out for this, it definitely has potential.

We Need To Do Something hits select theaters and VOD platforms on September 3rd.

Flag Day

On initial glance, it seems like the word-of-mouth isn’t that great, but the trailer does a pretty good job at selling you on the story, and in particular, the relationship, which makes sense considering the girl is Sean Penn’s actual daughter. It does run a bit longer than it needed to, but it has me curious. Not to the point where I would say I’m highly anticipating it, but it looks like a solid drama.

Flag Day hits select theaters on August 20th.

The Gateway

I love Shea Whigham, I think he’s a terrific actor, but this doesn’t look like it’s going to be great. I might end up enjoying it, I do typically like these kind of crime films, but from those weird wide angle lens shots from the opening to some of the hackneyed story beats later, it just feels like disposable stuff, which doesn’t mean it’s going to be terrible. But we’ll just have to wait and see, I am rooting for this to be good cause I dig Whigham a lot.

The Gateway hits select theaters on September 3rd.
