The Laundromat

It’s Steven Soderbergh, that’s it. That’s all I need to know. I already knew this was coming, and I didn’t even need to see the trailer to be sold on it. I gotta say, though – this looks way wackier than I expected this to be, but it wouldn’t be a Soderbergh film if there wasn’t at least one little thing that keeps you on your toes. I don’t know a whole lot about the Panama Papers scandal, so I might do a little reading before this releases, but I am very excited to check this out. P.S., check out High Flying Bird if you haven’t already.

The Laundromat opens in select theaters on September 7th before arriving on Netflix on October 18th.

Villains

Maika Monroe, Bill Skarsgård, and a hammy Jeffery Donovan? Yeah, sounds like a great time. This looks like a lot of fun. Dark and twisted, but with a sense of humor. Seems like my jam. I haven’t seen anything from filmmakers, Dan Berk and Robert Olsen, before, but I like the look of this. I’m gonna keep an eye out for it.

Villains hits select theaters on September 20th.

The King

Looks fine to me. I’m up for pretty much anything that David Michôd, and with Joel Edgerton co-writing the script, that’s enough to get me interested, even if the subject matter isn’t grabbing me quite as hard. The cast assembled here is pretty impressive, and it looks like Netflix didn’t skimp on the budget, which is nice. I’m curious to see how this one turns out.

The King opens in select theaters on October 11th before hitting Netflix on November 1st.

Motherless Brooklyn

I’ll admit, for that whole first bit in the trailer, I thought we were gonna be in for a rough ride with all the Tourette’s gags. However, once it settled down, and showed that it’s actually an old fashioned mystery, I got on board really fast. I don’t know what Edward Norton’s directing chops are like, I haven’t seen his other film, Keeping the Faith, from 2000, but I like what I see for the most part. The digital cinematography isn’t doing the film a ton of favors, I think film stock would’ve been better for the film noir vibe, but everything else looks solid. Consider me intrigued.

Motherless Brooklyn will be released in theaters on November 1st.

Greener Grass

Once the moment came where the boy fell into the pool, and came back out as a dog, and no one really bat an eye, I knew I was going to be into this. This looks delightfully bonkers, the colors are hyper aggressive, the humor is relentless and distinct from anything I’ve seen recently. I don’t know if it will all come together, but the word-of-mouth is pretty good, so I’m eager to see what this thing even is.

Greener Grass opens in select theaters and VOD platforms on October 18th.

Joker

Still not really doing much for me. I feel like I’ve seen stories like this so many times already, and simply having the Joker be the main character just isn’t interesting enough to get me invested. I hope it turns out great because I’m clearly in the minority on the hype train. Phoenix looks stellar though. At the very least, I can count on him being good.

Joker opens in theaters on October 4th.

Once Cut Of The Dead

Wow, I’ve never seen a trailer actively discourage people from watching it before. Props. I remember people talking about this from its festival run, and apparently, it’s fantastic. I was pretty zombied out for a while, but I’m down for more now, and if this is as good as people say, I’m definitely interested in checking it out.

One Cut Of The Dead opens in NY and LA on September 13th, and will play on select theaters nationwide for a one-night only event on September 17th.
