Trailer Talk: The Green Knight, The French Dispatch, and more!

The Green Knight

Two reasons I’m incredibly pumped for this. Actually three, one being that this just looks plain awesome. It’s so nice to see one of these medieval films actually go gritty without sacrificing the mythic and fantastical qualities of those stories (though, I’m admittedly not super familiar with the Arthurian legend this is based on). Two, Dev Patel is a great actor who always picks interesting projects that pushes him as a performer. And three, David Lowery is a gifted filmmaker, and anything he does will be on my radar. This looks thrilling and creepy and tense and beautiful. I dig the hell out of it. Can’t wait to see it.

The Greek Knight hits theaters on May 29th.

The French Dispatch

Yup, looks like a Wes Anderson movie. Is there really much else you can say about it? It has all his trademarks, and if that’s your thing, I don’t see why you wouldn’t be excited for it. I’ve warmed up to him more and more through his last several films (barring Isle Of Dogs), so I’m certainly open to this. No one makes movies like he does, and that’s pretty valuable.

The French Dispatch will open in theaters on July 24th.

The Hunt

It was absolutely terrible what happened to this movie, and I’m glad it’s finally being released – even if I highly doubt the film will be anywhere near as provocative as some might hope. I think it is smart to lean in on the controversy. Though, whether that will translate to a major success, I’m not sure. The Interview wasn’t a huge hit. I’m just hoping the movie is a good time.

The Hunt will hit theaters on March 13th.

The Personal History Of David Copperfield

It is a great day for Dev Patel. Two trailers for two big movies, both of which are hitting theaters the same month. This one comes curtesy of the always stellar Armando Iannucci, who is tackling some different material than I’m used to seeing from him. This looks wonderful and lively, and far more cinematic than anything I’ve seen from Iannucci before, even when the film is as good as something like The Death Of Stalin. Definitely looking forward to this.

The Personal History Of David Copperfield opens in theaters on May 8th.

Resistance

Boy…Jesse Eisenberg’s accent in this is…unfortunate. It’s weird because it’s almost like he doesn’t want to use it but he had to and didn’t commit to it. So, it’s not overt enough to work as a recognizable dialect, but it’s still just off from the way he usually speaks that you know he’s doing something with his voice. It’s so odd. Hopefully the film will be engaging enough to make it all work. I think the story of Marcel Marceau is a compelling one, and deserving of a film, so I hope it turns out well.

Resistance will open in select theaters and VOD platforms on March 27th.

The Vast Of Night

This is precisely my kind of nonsense. I love the premise, and I love the way it looks. It’s pretty much all my fascinations with this kind of subject matter distilled into one paranoid, nostalgic package. I have heard many good things about it, which is cool coming from a debut filmmaker, so I am very much looking forward to this.

The Vast Of Night will be released in select theaters and Amazon Prime on a currently unspecified release date.

Blow The Man Down

Amazon is putting out all these interesting little movies, and this is definitely no exception. It certainly touches on themes and ideas that I’ve seen before, but it seems to have a distinct way of presenting itself and its setting in particular that it might provide something fresh. It all seems fairly self explanatory, so not a ton to add, but like what I see. I hope it’s good.

Blow The Man Down will be available to stream on Amazon Prime on March 20th.
