The Feast

Well, that was certainly ominous. Not sure what to make of that, bu the word-of-mouth seems promising. This is from Wales, and I can’t say I’ve seen a ton of films from there, especially with the native language. This looks cool though, I like the vibe it’s going for. And it looks like it isn’t going to be abstract for the sake of being abstract, it looks like there will actually be some kind of gnarly payoff for the weird things that keep happening here. I’m curious what it’s trying to say with all this, but I’ll be interested in discovering once it’s out.

The Feast hits select theaters and VOD platforms on November 19th.

The Lost Daughter

Maggie Gyllenhaal is obviously a very talented performer, but it looks like she’s got quite the eye as a director as well. This trailer was definitely intriguing, and of course, when you have someone like Olivia Colman as the lead, it’s hard not to be glued on the screen. Even though I don’t really have much of an idea of what’s going on here. Aside from Colman, the rest of the cast looks terrific as well, it looks beautifully made, and I’m just excited to see how Gyllenhaal pulls this off as her directorial debut.

The Lost Daughter hits select theaters and Netflix on December 31st.

Being The Ricardos

Like a lot of folks, I was rather puzzled by the casting choice of Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem as Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, especially as someone who watched a lot of I Love Lucy growing up, but they’re both very talented, so I’ll definitely go into this open minded. I don’t have any strong feelings for Aaron Sorkin as a director, though they do lean on the not-very-impressed side of things. I wasn’t impressed with Molly’s Game, or The Trial Of The Chicago 7, but my inner pop culture dork is definitely very intrigued by this because there is an interesting story to tell about Lucille and Desi’s relationship, and I’m hoping Sorkin’s style works to the benefit of telling that story.

Being The Ricardos opens in theaters on December 10th before being released on Amazon Prime Video on December 21st.

The Tender Bar

This is the latest from George Clooney, and it seems fairly low-key compared to what he’s been doing recently. It seems like a nice change of pace, even if it doesn’t seem to be the most groundbreaking. But, come on, how can you not be immediately charmed by Ben Affleck playing the cool Uncle, that seems like the kind of role he’s born to play. I like what I see here, and while I don’t think it’s gonna blow my mind or anything, it looks like a great, comforting experience, which is sometimes all a movie needs to be.

The Tender Bar opens in select theaters starting December 17th before being available on Amazon Prime Video on January 7th, 2022.

Bruised

Another actor making their directorial debut, this time it’s Halle Berry, and on top of that, she also stars in this, which definitely adds a bit more pressure. I feel like Berry’s been getting some more well deserved respect in recent years, I recall growing up that folks didn’t think much of her, but I suppose people like me who grew up watching her got us more endeared to her screen presence. And by all accounts, she’s just a really cool person. This looks pretty good, even if you might see where the story is going, if it works, it works, and I’m getting a good feeling out of this trailer. Can’t wait to see it.

Bruised opens in select theaters on November 17th before hitting Netflix on November 24th.

The Batman

It looks fine. Like, yes, I’ll see it, it looks solid, but I can’t say I’m super pumped about this. Mostly because it looks only a mild variation on the same basic take on the character we’ve seen for the past two decades. I don’t mind dark and gritty, but surely, there’s a more interesting way to approach this. Hell, I would love to see something similar to the Arkham games, which do have a dark and gritty approach, but still embrace the comic booky elements of the character. This just looks like the Nolan movies, but with that dirty, Se7en-esque grungy aesthetic. Is that enough to make this feel fresh? This trailer isn’t doing it for me, not like the teaser at least, but I will say I am loving whatever Colin Farrell is doing here.

The Batman hits theaters on March 4th, 2022.
