The Eternal Daughter

I find it amusing that the director whose previous films starred Honor Swinton Byrne, Tilda Swinton’s daughter, now has a new film out with Tilda Swinton playing a mother-daughter duo. I haven’t seen the second Souvenir film, though I hear it’s good, even from folks who like me didn’t care that much about the first. I’ll try and get around to it before this. Cause this looks pretty interesting to me, and not just for the performance. It looks compelling and creepy, and I’m curious to see how far Joanna Hogg will take the genre elements.

The Eternal Daughter hits select theaters on December 2nd.

Disenchanted

About 15 years since the first one came out, and this is the story they went with? I’m pretty sure this would have been the same premise if this had been a direct-to-DVD sequel the year after the first one. It doesn’t look terrible, just a bit uninspired. The cast still looks great, the same songwriters are back, and there are definitely some amusing parts in the trailer. I really dug the first film, but I’m not holding my breath for this one.

Disenchanted premieres exclusively on Disney+ on November 18th.

Avatar: The Way Of Water

Can you build a franchise off of pure vibes alone? Well, it seems like James Cameron is about to try. But in all honesty, this looks…like, really good. Even speaking as someone who really digs the first Avatar, I can agree with some of the criticisms, but it looks like a lot of those aren’t going to apply here, at least, based on the few minutes of footage that is given to us. You can also see the improvements in the effects, the visuals here are gorgeous and awe-inspiring at times. I have no idea what Cameron has in store, but you can never count him out, so I’ll be there, day one.

Avatar: The Way Of Water opens in theaters on December 16th.

Lamborghini: The Man Behind The Legend

It’s cool to see Frank Grillo be the lead in something like this as opposed to another generic, low budget crime thriller, now we’re getting into generic low budget biopic territory. I honestly didn’t think this looked half bad. Grillo’s accent might be a bit of a struggle, it sounds like he’s constantly on the verge of slipping out of it. But it’s definitely an interesting story to explore, especially if you love cars. But then again, “from the Academy Award Winning Writer of Crash” doesn’t inspire a ton of confidence.

Lamborghini: The Man Behind The Legend hits select theaters and VOD platforms on November 18th.

The Swimmers

Can’t say I’ve heard this story before, but it does seem quite compelling, even if the package it’s boxed in is otherwise a pretty straightforward feel-good movie. I recognized Matthias Schweighöfer from Army Of The Dead, and he’s pretty much the only recognizable face here. Not a whole lot to really dig into, this seems like it’s going for a very broad appeal, and that’s fine. Hopefully it does justice to these people’s stories because it does seem like a story that is worth telling and exploring.

The Swimmers opens in select theaters on November 11th before streaming on Netflix on November 23rd.

A Christmas Story Christmas

This is A Christmas Story 2 erasure! OK, maybe it’s best that film does get erased. I don’t think anyone wants to remember that, much less fondly. It’s cool they got Peter Billingsley back to play Ralphie, love seeing Julie Hagerty as well. It definitely seems to capture the overall vibe of the original, from what I remember. I hope it keeps that dark edge, I would hope so considering the co-writer is Nick Schenk, of Gran Torino, The Judge, and Cry Macho fame.  This is from the director of The Angry Birds Movie, so hopefully Clay Kaytis can bring that animated energy to the gags. Not pumped or anything, but curious.

A Christmas Story Christmas will debut on HBO Max on November 17th.
