Tenet
Yeah, it’s a new Christopher Nolan movie, of course I’m interested. It’s got all his trademarks, the fancy outfits, stoic characters, and naturally, his inability to leave the concept of time alone. This looks cool, I can’t wait to see it.
Tenet hits theaters on July 17th, 2020.
Saint Maud
Look, A24, you can throw a pop song into one of your trailers, but that ain’t convincing anyone that you’ve somehow made something that will appeal to most mainstream audiences. I was actually thrown off when I heard the song because I don’t recall any other trailer from A24 going that route. I’m sure it doesn’t reflect the film itself, which I heard from its festival run was actually really good. So, this is definitely one to keep an eye out for, even if I still don’t have much of a clue what’s going on.
Saint Maud opens in theaters on March 27th, 2020.
The Woman In The Window
I remember when this was supposed to come out this year, and was thought to be the film that will finally deliver the Oscar winning role for Amy Adams before Disney pushed the release date. Whatever drama is going on, it doesn’t seem reflected here, I’m really into this trailer. It’s a compelling hook, the actors all look fantastic, especially Amy Adams, and Joe Wright is a solid visual stylist. I really like what I see here, so I’m going to be cautiously optimistic about it.
The Woman In The Window opens in theaters on May 15th, 2020.
Never Rarely Sometimes Always
I had to look her up because I didn’t immediately recognize the name, but the writer/director is Eliza Hittman, who has made a few features before – It Felt Like Love, and Beach Rats. I haven’t seen her first film, but I did find Beach Rats to be quite good and fascinating. I can definitely see some of her style from that film here. Very raw, very intimate, very nuanced in portraying tough situations that young people deal with. This looks very good, and I’m looking forward to seeing this.
Never Rarely Sometimes Always will be released in theaters on March 13th, 2020.
The Truth
While I’m not super well versed in the filmography of Japanese filmmaker, Hirokazu Kore-eda, I was deeply impressed with his two films from 2018, Shoplifters, and the somewhat lesser known, The Third Murder. Both were among the best films I saw that year, so naturally, I’m going to be intrigued by his first English language outing. The Truth seems very pleasant, and it has a lot of wonderful actors that I admire. I’m sure it will be something interesting.
The Truth hits select theaters on March 20th, 2020.
To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You
Surprisingly not a sequel to the 2007 Gerard Butler, Hilary Swank romance movie, P.S. I Love You. I know I’m probably the millionth person to make that joke by now, but it’s pretty hard to resist. I enjoyed To All The Boys I Loved Before for what it is, but not necessarily to the point where I would want a sequel. I’m failing to see what the big hook is this time around. I had to look it up, and I forgot about the mid-credits scene, where a new guy enters the picture. Not the most inventive way to get a new story going, but as long as it still has the charms of that original film, I suppose it could still be fun.
To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You hits Netflix on February 12th, 2020.
VHYes
This looks very cute. I got some laughs out of this, and the premise certainly touches on a nostalgic experience that few things have touched on recently, the experience of recording things on VHS tapes, and the messy ways that whole process can be. It almost seems like a series of sketches, which – as long as they’re funny – could make for an interesting little movie. I’m curious about this.
VHYes opens in select theaters on January 17th.
