Trailer Talk: Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker, The Perfection, and more!

Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker

They sure know how to cut a good teaser. That’s honestly all I have to say about this. I’m into theorizing as other fans might be, and I’m not super crazy about the title, especially in terms of the larger “discourse” that went around with The Last Jedi. Of course, I’ll reserve judgment until the movie comes out, which I am still very much looking forward to.

Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20th.

The Perfection

The buzz on this one when it hit Fantastic Fest last year was insane, and I’ve been excited to see it ever since. I haven’t read too much into about what the story is, but based on how some of the critics who saw it talked about it, it’s probably best to go in blind. Plus, it’s directed by Richard Shepard, who directed The Matador and Dom Hemingway, two really great movies, so I’m excited to see what he has in store for this one.

The Perfection will hit Netflix on May 24th.

Child’s Play

I guess I dig the idea of Chucky being able to connect to various devices. If you’re going to update the premise, that is definitely the way to go. But, I don’t know, I’m still not completely convinced that this is all that necessary considering the original series has been going along just fine with the most recent installment coming out just a couple years ago. I am curious about Mark Hamill voicing the character, and the presence of folks like Aubrey Plaza and Brian Tyree Henry is deeply odd, but it makes this even more tempting. I’ll try to keep an open mind about this.

Child’s Play will open in theaters on June 21st.

Skin

OK, so…if I were to look at this just on its own, without any context, I would say it looks kinda interesting, maybe even somewhat promising. However, this is by Guy Nattiv, who just recently won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short for a short also called “Skin.” This actually doesn’t look like a remake, which is surprising, but it does share Danielle Macdonald as a love interest of a white supremacist. The thing is – and know that I don’t take any pleasure in this – but Skin sucked. It’s bad, like really bad, the worst kind of bad, the kind of bad that thinks it’s being really smart and clever and thought provoking, and I was baffled when I got around to seeing it after it won because it was just so…bad. Like I said, this seems to go in a completely different direction, but I don’t know if I can trust Nattiv to capture the necessary nuances of telling a story involving these kinds of people. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt, but I am skeptical.

Skin will be released on June 27th through DirecTV Cinema before being hitting select theaters on July 26th.

Hobbs & Shaw

You hear that? That’s the sound of Vin Diesel shaking in his boots. My word, this looks like such a good time. I feel like it does give away a bit too much, but I’ll forget most of it by the time this hits theaters. I don’t have a lot to say about this. It’s got actors I like in it, an action director who knows his stuff, and it just looks like a blast. I’m excited.

Hobbs & Shaw will open in theaters on August 2nd.

Dark Phoenix

Not a lot of trailers this week, so might as well bring up the final trailer for Dark Phoenix. And…yeah, still doesn’t look very good. It’s just not the kind of story that can be done well as a one-off kinda thing. It’s something that needs to be built up, and we know next to nothing about these particular young versions of the X-Men characters. I’m sure I said this about the previous already, so I’ll just end it here. Hopefully, we’ll get something more interesting whenever Marvel Studios decides to bring these characters back their own way.

Dark Phoenix will open in theaters on June 7th.
