The Last Thing He Wanted

Not gonna lie, this trailer doesn’t do much to really grab me. It feels like a number of disposable thrillers I’ve already seen before. However, what does excite me about this is Dee Rees, who co-wrote and directed this. Between Pariah and Mudbound, she’s one of the most compelling new voices to emerge this past decade, and I’ve been eager to see where she goes next. This isn’t what I would have imagined, but considering she has a hand in the script, it doesn’t seem to totally be a “one for them” project. So, consider me cautiously optimistic.

The Last Thing He Wanted will hit Netflix on February 21st.

Spenser Confidential

Hey! A Peter Berg movie that actually looks fun! Thank goodness he seems to be coming out of that weird phase where he was suddenly an Important™ filmmaker because yikes. This kind of material has always been his strong suit, harkening back to stuff like Very Bad Things and, especially, The Rundown. I’m excited to see Winston Duke in more stuff. Felt like I haven’t seen him in anything since Us. So, yeah, this looks solid.

Spenser Confidential hits Netflix on March 6th.

Horse Girl

Alison Brie co-wrote this, making it her first official writing credit, so that’s pretty interesting. This is from Jeff Baena, who previously made The Little Hours, which was mostly fine. This is definitely something different, and especially from a tonal perspective. It looks like there might be some weird stuff going on, and if so, I hope the filmmakers don’t hold back on it. We could use more weird.

Horse Girl will be available on Netflix on February 7th.

Guns Akimbo

I dig the hell out of what I’m seeing here. Daniel Radcliffe has been making some bold choices in recent years, and this looks like another wild project. This is from Jason Lei Howden, who made the heavy metal horror comedy, Deathgasm, a few years back, which I haven’t seen, but heard good things about. He certainly brings a lot of verve to the screen, and the concept is fun. This is one I’m gonna be looking out for.

Guns Akimbo opens in theaters on February 28th.

Olympic Dreams

This looks cute. Like a solid date movie. I can’t say that the whole “first film to shoot in the Olympic Village” thing is as radical as they make it seem, but sure, that’s neat, I guess. I do like Nick Kroll, and he was always solid in all the dramatic performances I’ve seen from him. It doesn’t seem like the most substantial piece of filmmaking ever, but it looks harmless enough. I usually end up enjoying these kinds of movies anyway. So, sure, you have my interest.

Olympic Dreams opens in select theaters and VOD platforms on February 14th.

Disappearance At Clifton Hill

I dug the vibes that this trailer gave me. A twisty-turny, noir-ish thriller is right up my alley, and David Cronenberg being in the cast is just icing on the cake. Don’t have much else to dig into here. I haven’t seen this director, Albert Shin’s prior film, In Her Place, though I’ve heard it was very good. This looks pretty solid to me, so it’s definitely one I’ll keep an eye out for.

Vivarium

This is maybe the most promising film on today’s Trailer Talk – at least, for me. I like the blend of science fiction, horror, and satire, and the setup is incredibly intriguing. Jesse Eisenberg and Imogen Poots made for a compelling duo in The Art Of Self-Defense, and they look like they’re doing some interesting things here with this material. I’m really looking forward to this one.

Vivarium will hit select theaters and VOD platforms on March 27th.
