Soul
This looks incredible. I’m loving the visual design of everything here, it doesn’t look like anything I’ve seen before – except for all the stuff that takes place with the humans, obviously. Still, I’m intrigued by the ideas being explored here, Pete Docter has shown with his prior work that he can take complex ideas and bring nuances to them in ways that are emotionally resonant and entertaining. But the thing I’m still most excited about it hearing that Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross score. By the way, check out Onward, it’s really good.
Soul will be released in theaters on June 19th.
Jungle Cruise
Is it just me, or is Disney not giving this as big of a push as they usually do for their projects? I almost forgot about this, and it stars Dwayne Johnson and it’s coming in a little over four months. Not sure why that’s the case, but this still looks pretty fun. I liked that little beat at the end between Johnson and Blunt. Not much else to say that I didn’t already say when the teaser came out. I hope it’s good.
Jungle Cruise hits theaters on July 24th.
Black Widow
This is a much better trailer than the first one, at least to me. It feels more well rounded, it flows better, packs a punch, gives enough plot details without giving too much away. I’m definitely more sold on this, though I was already looking forward to it. It looks like Cate Shortland did a really good job directing this, and I’m really excited to seeing all these new characters. Marvel has a big year with this, The Eternals, and all their Disney+ shows coming. Let’s hope this movie gets things off to a good start.
Assuming it doesn’t get delayed, Black Widow opens in theaters on May 1st.
Bad Trip
I really like the idea of filming a movie around people who don’t realize they’re in the movie, and thus reacting to all the outrageous stuff in real time. This conceit comes off much better here than in the first trailer, where it almost just seems like a series of sketches, while this trailer gives a sense of a continuing narrative. I’m curious to see how far they go with that concept. Still think the stars in this are a touch too recognizable for a project like this, but as long as it’s funny – which I did find the trailer to be – then it’s all good.
Bad Trip will be released in theaters on April 17th.
The Third Day
It’s a slow week for trailers, so I figured I’d include this cause it looks really interesting. What if The Wicker Man, but it stars Jude Law? Sure, I’ve heard worse, I’ll take it. Can’t say it looks like it’ll be the most unpredictable thing ever, but it’s the best of these types of stories usually have some strong emotional core to them, or some fun genre twist to them that makes them worth revisiting. Not sure what the big hook here is yet, but given the cast, I’m willing to give this a shot.
The Third Day premieres on HBO on May 11th.
