Scrapper

I like the look of this, it looks really interesting, and the story is one that even from the trailer I was really able to get invested in. Haven’t seen anything from this filmmaker, Charlotte Regan, but it looks assured and resonating and seemingly has a lot of grit. I like Harris Dickinson as a performer, he always seems to be on the cutting edge of hitting stardom, but never really does. Maybe he’s only interested in these more lowkey, arthouse movies as opposed to anything huge, though the few that he has been in weren’t the best. Either way, this looks cool. Can’t wait to check it out..

Scrapper opens in select theaters on August 25th.

The Dive

Definitely looks intense. We’ve gotten these kind of stuck under the water stories before, but I can’t recall any that had this “stuck under a rock” scenario. When done well, these kinds of movies can be really visceral and fun. Plus, the filmmakers will play with the form to keep the few locations from getting boring, which is always an amusing thing to watch. Has me intrigued for sure.

The Dive hits theaters on August 25th.

Happiness For Beginners

Despite being an acclaimed comedy actress who had her own show that ran for several seasons, I don’t think I’ve seen Ellie Kemper lead a film before, at least, not to my knowledge, maybe there is one out there. I’m curious why she hasn’t had a bigger film presence. Maybe the TV stuff took up her time, maybe she wasn’t interested. I don’t know, but I do think she is talented. This trailer unfortunately doesn’t really interest me. I feel like I’ve seen uplifting character stories like this before, and they almost always follow a very similar path. It doesn’t look bad by any means, just not my taste.

Happiness For Beginners hits Netflix on July 27th.

Dreamin’ Wild

You have no idea how much I perked up when I saw that this was from Bill Pohlad, the director of Love & Mercy, one of the most underrated films of the 2010s. Interesting how his follow up is about another group of real musicians. I guess he has a thing. Either way, a lot more excited for this, Casey Affleck’s involvement aside. The story itself is really compelling, and it made me want to look more into the story that this is based on. I’ll definitely be checking this out.

Dreamin’ Wild opens in theaters on August 4th.

The Eternal Memory

Very much in for this. I loved The Mole Agent, so whatever Maite Alberdi does next is something I will be interested in. And this trailer certainly packs a punch. It looks very emotional and enthralling in its portrait of age, love, and memory. I wonder if similarly to The Mole Agent, this will be done in a way that feels almost like a narrative film as opposed to a documentary. Either way, I am very much looking forward to this.

The Eternal Memory opens in select theaters on August 11th.

A Compassionate Spy

Steve James is a name you don’t ignore in the documentary world. I mean, this is the guy that gave us Hoop Dreams. I don’t know much about this particular story about Theodore Hall, but it has me curious. I like stories like these, especially from this time period. Not sure what else to say about this, but the trailer has a lot of intrigue and promise, so it might be something I will keep an eye out for.

A Compassionate Spy hits select theaters and VOD platforms on August 4th.
