Rustin
I’m totally here for a big movie led by Colman Domingo, the guy is always a highlight in any project he shows up in, and this certainly looks like a meaty role for him to chew on. I really liked Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, so definitely curious to see how this filmmaker fares with a bigger scope to play around in. It does seem like a more typical biopic than something like Ma Rainey, which used real people in a fictionalized scenario. But still, there’s potential for something interesting here.
Rustin opens in select theaters on November 3rd before hitting Netflix on November 17th.
Anyone But You
Wow. I’ve heard some iffy things about this trailer, but now that I’ve seen it, it’s just…baffling that this is what they put out. No explanation as to why they’re faking a relationship, zero chemistry between the leads, no real hint at the tone and type of humor to be expected, this is like everything you don’t want to do with a trailer, even as a teaser. Maybe the film itself will be just fine, it’s standard rom-com stuff, which is all nice and good, but mam, what a bad first impression.
Anyone But You will be released in theaters on December 15th.
Drift
I feel like it’s been a while since I’ve seen Cynthia Erivo in something. This looks pretty solid, I suppose. Mostly just a vibes thing from the looks of it, very Sundance-y, perhaps to a fault, but I guess we’ll find out for sure when it comes out, which isn’t until next year. I’m definitely curious about this one.
Drift opens in select theaters starting February 9th, 2024.
The Boys In The Boat
Have we gotten a lot of rowing movies? I don’t think we have. That’s certainly interesting, at least compared to other sports we’ve seen a million times already, even if it seems to be following a standard inspirational sports drama formula. George Clooney’s directorial efforts are hit-and-miss, but I usually admire his swings. This one seems solid enough, if mostly due to the classic formula, but it does have my curiosity.
The Boys In The Boat hits theaters on December 25th.
Occupied City
I think Steve McQueen is a really vital filmmaker, so obviously I’ll be interested in whatever he does. This being a piece of documentary filmmaking is really interesting, considering how it’s approaching the subject with the presentation. It’s also a long one, over 4 hours I think, which I’m sure will prove challenging for some, but I’m very much intrigued by what I’m seeing here and the potential it has to be something special.
Occupied City opens in select theaters on December 25th.
Leave The World Behind
OK, slightly more info than what we got from the teaser, and overall a better trailer too. And it still doesn’t give a whole lot of way. A really good sense of mystery and intrigue here. Not a whole lot else to add here that I didn’t already mention last time. Very much excited to see this now.
Leave The World Behind will be released in select theaters on November 22nd before streaming on Netflix on December 8th.
