Trailer Talk: Rebel Ridge, Slingshot, and more!

Rebel Ridge

Finally! I’ve been waiting so long for this. I’ve been a huge fan of Jeremy Saulnier’s work for a while, since Blue Ruin, and I’ve been hotly anticipating everything he’s made since. And I’ve loved all his movies so far, he is very much four for four at this point between Murder Party, Blue Ruin, Green Room, and Hold The Dark. This looks like it’ll be closer to the scale of something like Green Room and Hold The Dark, and I hope it’s just as visceral and brutal as those were. This is one I am very excited for, so I can’t wait.

Rebel Ridge hits Netflix on September 6th.

Slingshot

Y’all know I love me some space movies. This looks like it’s going to be a pretty basic genre exercise, nothing especially deep like Ad Astra or even First Man. But it could be fun. This cast is solid enough, and the premise is decent, even if it feels like a setup for a somewhat obvious twist, but I’ll give it a shot.

Slingshot hits theaters on August 23rd.

The Silent Hour

Well, this looks better than I would have expected. This looks fun. It is a little amusing that we had one movie called Silent Night where Joel Kinnaman can’t talk, now there’s this where he can’t hear. Now, we just need to complete the trilogy with a film where he is blind. Also, I looked it up, and saw that this is from Brad Anderson, who is a good filmmaker, so my hopes for this shot way up. I’m definitely excited to see this one.

The Silent Hour hits select theaters and VOD platforms on October 11th.

Greedy People

This looks cool. Pretty basic darkly comic  morality tale in the vein of Fargo and A Simple Plan, but it looks like it could be a good time. This is from Potsy Ponciroli, who made a western called Old Henry, which I enjoyed quite a bit, though not as quirky as this from the looks of this. I think this has potential, so I’ll remain cautiously optimistic about this, especially given the cast involved.

Greedy People opens in select theaters on August 23rd.

Rez Ball

This looks really solid. Admittedly, it looks like a fairly standard inspiration sports movie, but this time with a focus on Indigenous characters, which isn’t surprising given it’s directed by Sydney Freeland, who co-wrote the film with Sterlin Harjo, the creator of Reservation Dogs. I haven’t seen the show, but by all accounts it’s quite good, and seems like something I’d enjoy. And I dig movies like these anyway, the tropes are part of what makes these so fun. So, I’ll definitely be looking out for this one.

Rez Ball will be released on Netflix on September 27th.

And Mrs

This is a pretty interesting idea for a story, and I’m very curious to see how they play it out. I don’t know much about the filmmakers involved, so I don’t know what to expect, but this trailer makes a solid enough impression. For me, at least. I’ll be keeping this one on my radar for sure.

And Mrs hits VOD platforms on September 2nd.
