I’m not familiar with Julio Torres’ work on either SNL or his HBO show, but just from the looks of this, he really has some compelling ideas swirling around in his head. This looks really cool and fun and inventive. We don’t get a ton of surreal comedies, so whenever we do get one, I really hope it turns out good. There seems to be a lot of confidence in this, despite all the wild swings its taking, so we might have something special here. Can’t wait.
Problemista hits select theaters on August 4th.
I haven’t seen any of Dustin Guy Defa’s previous films, so I don’t really have a frame of reference for what this movie will be, but then again, it looks like any number of low budget dramedies I’ve seen over the course of my life. Not to say it looks bad, just that upon immediate reaction, it doesn’t seem like it’s bringing anything particularly interesting to the table. I would definitely like to be proven wrong, and I feel like I haven’t seen Michael Cera in a substantial role in a while, so that will be intriguing.
The Adults opens in theaters on August 18th.
I’m sure this will be pretty good, but man, what made a film like Polite Society feel so fresh was that it was able to explore a lot of the anxieties of children of immigrants, particularly in brown households, but within a framework that was totally different from the typical “too brown to be American, too American to be brown” thing that I’m honestly getting really tired of hearing about. However, I do see a potential in this film, given it’s not a genre piece like Polite Society, has the opportunity to build on the mother-daughter themes that I felt the other film was lacking. I may have sounded like a bit of a curmudgeon, but I am looking forward to this.
The Persian Version opens in theaters on a currently unspecified date this fall.
It took me way longer to realize that was Letitia Wright than I care to say. Also, RIP to a real one, it’s nice to see Michael K. Williams again. I like westerns a lot, so this definitely appeals to me, and for the most part, this looks really good. Although, there are some lines of dialogue here that are laying it on real thick. I’m hoping it comes across better in the film itself. I felt Anthony Mandler’s adaptation of Monster was solid enough, but nothing super memorable, so I’ll be curious to see how he handles a bigger scope here.
Surrounded will be released on VOD platforms on June 20th.
Yeah, as if the teaser wasn’t cool enough, I am definitely all in at this point. Love the art style, love the voices, and now that there’s a better idea of what the story is, I think it’s really compelling, and certainly different from what we’ve seen before in prior TMNT movies. Very excited for this.
Teenage Mutant Ninka Turtles: Mutant Mayhem hits theaters on August 2nd.
This looks cute! I can’t remember the last time we had a mockumentary. And this one is directed by Nick Lieberman and Molly Gordon, who is also in the film, I believe it’s their debut. Definitely makes things more interesting, Gordon in particular has been in some good comedies before, and the setup does have potential for some big laughs. This trailer is pretty well done, and gives off a decent vibe, so I’ll definitely be looking forward to this.
Theater Camp opens in theaters on July 14th.
