Pleasure

I’m curious about this. I hadn’t heard much about it until this trailer came out, so I did a bit of research, apparently, Neon acquired this after A24 planned on released an R-rated cut, so I guess we’re getting an uncensored/potentially NC-17 version of this when it does come out. I wonder how that will affect its box office. The story itself doesn’t seem like much to me, I’m kind of getting tired of stories about characters obsessed with “being the best” in blank. They start to feel repetitive after a while, and I think it’s very easy to dig into the dark side of the porn industry because it’s already a demonized world from the mainstream perspective. I hope it’s more interesting than it’s letting on.

Pleasure hits select theaters on May 13th.

 

Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood

Always on board for a new Richard Linklater flick, and the fact that this is tangentially related to space exploration automatically makes this a must-see for me. At this point, anyone’s who has read my stuff for a couple years now should know that I love space movies and anything that relates to that. I love Linklater’s style, and I dug his rotoscoping projects. I’m really charmed by this, it looks like a lot of fun, sort of like him working on School Of Rock mode again, I mean, the premise alone is absolutely ludicrous, but the right kind of ludicrous.

Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood will be released on Netflix on April 1st.

 

Obi-Wan Kenobi

Yeah, this looks fine, I guess. So far, none of these Star Wars shows (the live-action ones, at least) have fully hit for me. I was mostly indifferent towards The Mandalorian. I did really like The Boob Of Boba Fett until it just became The Manalorian Season 3, and completely lost me. I’m hoping this one is good all the way through, a seeming rarity with these Disney+ shows. McGregor was one of the bright spots of the prequels, performance wise, so it’s cool to see him back. I just hope this isn’t going to be taking place mostly on Tatooine, because I feel like we’ve been stuck here for a majority of all these shows so far. I will say tho, if they bring back Dexter Jetster, this will be the best show, hands down.

Obi-Wan Kenobi hits Disney+ starting May 25th.

 

The Bubble

I generally like Judd Apatow’s work, I think he works well with his actors, and his storytelling instincts are usually solid, especially compared to some of his other improv heavy peers. I like the idea behind this, and I’m a sucker for stories about the making of movies. Can’t say I got a ton of laughs from this trailer, but it’s one I am looking forward to.

The Bubble hits Netflix on April 1st.

 

Cow

Andrea Arnold is a filmmaker I haven’t fully caught up with, I’ve only seen American Honey, which I sadly did not like very much. I do hope to catch up on more of her work at some point. I gotta say, didn’t expect this to be her next project. There’s been a couple docs like this the past few years, so I don’t know if there’s much else that can be said about it. I always feel like these kinds of films are preaching to the choir when it comes to animal rights, factory farming, etc. I’m sure I will end up liking this one, but I don’t know if I’m emotionally prepared for it.

Cow opens in select theaters and VOD platforms on April 8th.

 

All The Old Knives

I like this, I dig the vibe, the setup is interesting, and there’s a set of actors here that I really enjoy seeing. Feels like one of those thrillers from the 90s, the kind we’d get a ton of, but are now seemingly reserved for streaming platforms only because midrange budget films for adults don’t do as well in the box office. Anyway, not much to say here, I haven’t seen Janus Metz’s films before, though I heard that Borg/McEnroe was good. I’ll be keeping an eye out for this.

All The Old Knives will be released in select theaters and Amazon Prime Video on April 8th.
