Pig

I’ve heard about this film for a while, and I’ve been really excited to see what this will be like, and I gotta say, this is nothing close to what I had in mind, and I mean that in the best way possible. This looks way more somber than I anticipated, and I honestly think that’s great, cause I now know the filmmakers aren’t just trying to capitalize on that classic Cage wackiness, they actually want to tell a story, and I’m sure there’s gonna be a sense of humor, especially with the trailer closing off with the line “who has my pig?” delivered with an intense sense of gravity. But it looks like there’s attention placed on character, and it’s giving Cage a lot of material to work with. He’s already one of my favorite actors, and it’s fun to see him go wild, but it’s also nice to see him actually work with decent material. I can’t wait to see this.

Pig hits theaters on July 16th.

Gunpowder Milkshake

This is from Navot Papushado, who co-directed a really great film from 2013 called Big Bad Wolves, and I’ve been eagerly anticipating this film since it was announced. It’s just cool to see an action film that prominently features actresses over the age of 40. In fact, if it were up to me, I would love to see a film like this without including the whole assassin protecting a child angle that we’ve seen plenty of times before. I’m sure Karen Gillan and Chloe Coleman will do a good job, but I’m in this for Headey, Bassett, Yeoh, and Gugino (and Giamatti too, I suppose) all the way. I’m very excited for this.

Gunpowder Milkshake opens in select theaters and on Netflix on July 14th.

Die In A Gunfight

So, a quirky action-comedy take on Romeo and Juliet? I guess there’s been plenty of worse takes on it. This doesn’t look bad by any means, but there’s been so many riffs on this story that I just don’t see the appeal. There are some actors I enjoy here, so I might eventually give it a shot, but this trailer isn’t doing much for me. It looks like the filmmaking has a lot of energy to it, but the the trailer lacks the punch. Also, what is the point of doing this kind of take on the story when Baz Luhrmann went full throttle back in 1996? Maybe there’s more to it than the trailer implies, and I hope so, cause there are sparks of creativity here, and I’d hate to see it wasted on a story like this.

Die In A Gunfight hits select theaters and VOD platforms on July 16th.

The Woman Who Ran

This is the latest from South Korean filmmaker, Hong Sang-soo, who is a director I’ve been meaning to get into for a while. I’ve heard great things about films like Grass, On The Beach At Night Alone, and Right Now, Wrong Then, among many others. He seems to make a lot of quiet, low-key movies, and you can definitely tell from this trailer that this is one of his films. I recognize  Kim Min-hee from The Handmaiden, and she was in a couple of Hong Sang-soo’s films as well. I like the vibe this trailer is giving me, and it’s one I’ll have to keep an eye out for.

The Woman Who Ran opens in select theaters starting July 9th.

Midnight In The Switchgrass

Megan Fox is in the midst of a comeback, and I am here for it. That said, this looks…not great. It’s every serial killer being chased down by cops movie I’ve ever seen, and it doesn’t look to be adding anything new to the table. The only notable thing about this is that it’s the directorial debut for  Randall Emmett, who is a big producer who has his name on a lot of films, from  Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, to Mississippi Grind, to Lone Survivor, to End Of Watch, and even Silence and The Irishman. He’s no small potatoes, but from the looks of this trailer, he is no auteur. If you want to see a real kick-ass Megan Fox movie, I recommend last year’s Rogue.

Midnight In The Switchgrass hits select theaters, Apple TV+, and VOD platforms on July 23rd.

Robin Robin

This week has been a bit short on trailers, so I’m including this teaser for a short that will be coming to Netflix. I’m always here fro whatever Aardman Animations does. They’re terrific in their craft, and I love their sense of humor. This looks absolutely adorable. It obviously doesn’t give away much, it is very much a teaser trailer in that regard, but it’s a cute premise they have going on here, and it’s probably best that they keep their marketing brief since the special isn’t going to be anywhere close to feature length. I’m sure this will be great, so keep an eye for it when it comes out.

Robin Robin will be released on Netflix on November 27th.
