Outside The Wire

Huh. I know this is listed as a teaser, so I’m not expecting to get a ton of answers, but it would have been nice to at least get a basic understanding of what this world is, and what exactly the story is. The robots are the bad guys, OK, and Anthony Mackie is part or perhaps mostly robot, but he’s a good guy, and…that’s pretty much all I got. I don’t think it looks bad, it’s definitely a conceit that I’m willing to give a shot, especially since it’s so rare to get a big genre film like this that isn’t based on a comic or a novel or anything else. This is a fully original IP, and that’s pretty cool to see. Hopefully, it can delivers on the promise of its cool imagery.

Outside The Wire hits Netflix on January 15th, 2021.

Nobody

I almost hesitated to watch the trailer because I’ve been sold on this since it was announced. I mean, despite not being a huge fan of Hardcore Henry (I mostly felt the first person gimmick doesn’t work for an entire feature), that filmmaker working with David Leitch’s production company, along with the main writer of the John Wick series, and on top of all that, you got Bob Odenkirk as the star…like…what more could I possibly ask for? And yeah, the trailer is pretty awesome too.

Nobody hits theaters on February 26th, 2021.

Nomadland

I’ve already seen a screener for this, so just to get it out there, it’s good, really good, and you should definitely check it out – even if I can’t in good conscience recommend going to a theater because I doubt things will suddenly get better as early as February. It sucks cause this will probably look amazing on the big screen. I’ll have some brief thoughts written about this in a 2020 Catch Up post that will come towards the end of the year, so look out for that. I’d say the trailer reflects the film well enough, so if you were intrigued by the trailer, I think you’ll love the movie.

Nomadland will receive a wide release in theaters on February 19th, 2021.

Herself

Wow, it really has been nine years since Phyllida Lloyd last made a film. And despite the fact that I wasn’t all that into either the first Mamma Mia (though I loved the second film) or The Iron Lady, I do think this one looks far and beyond the best thing she’s done yet. Something small, intimate, relatable, and emotionally involving. I suppose it also helps when the film’s star, Clare Dunne, is also the co-writer. Not a whole lot else to say about it, but it does look good.

Herself will stream on Amazon Prime Video on January 8th, 2021.

The Right One

One thing about this trailer that baffles me is that we never see the guy talk. Like, we hear his voice at that moment in the gallery and when the girl talks to him before he gets into the bus, but his back is turned to us. The rest of the trailer is him prancing about in complete silence, it’s honestly quite off-putting, I cannot fathom what anyone would see in this dollar store Tim Heidecker looking guy, who I’m guessing is some kind of attempt at a Manic Pixie Dream Dude, which…can we just not? I mean, this girl can frankly do so much better.

The Right One will be available on VOD platforms on February 5th, 2021.

PG: Psycho Goreman

I honestly didn’t expect much from this when I first included it on my list for this Trailer Talk, but once I got around to watching it, I was pleasantly surprised by how funny it is. It feels like some early Troma flick, and i love the dynamic between Mr. Goreman and the little girl. This is from  Steven Kostanski, one of the directors behind The Void, which I thought was a solid throwback horror film, but wasn’t super enamored with. However, this looks like a ton of fun, and I can’t wait to see it.

PG: Psycho Goreman opens in select theaters and VOD platforms on January 22nd, 2021.
