I like what I’m seeing here. WWII movies may be a dime a dozen, but I still enjoy them, and I have a particular fondness for weird side stories like this, the kind we don’t normally learn a whole lot about, the footnotes, the strange missions, etc. Definitely looks like the biggest scope I’ve ever seen coming from John Madden, he’s a fairly competent workman director. The title is a bit weird, though I can see why they put it that way,, but at least it’s memorable. I’m definitely looking forward to this.
Operation Mincemeat hits select theaters and Netflix on May 11th.
I have a hard time imagining anyone looking at Auliʻi Cravalho, and being like, “no, I would never go out with her.” So, strike one there. In all seriousness, this looks fine, I suppose. A lot of these coming-of-age movies I’ve seen pop up on Hulu have that same bright, late 2000s Disney show look that isn’t particularly easy on the eyes, but aside from that, nothing particularly major here. I guess it’s cool seeing a story like this from this point-of-view, even if that’s the one thing that sets it apart from other films with this same story. I’m sure it’ll be a pleasant enough film.
Crush will be released on Hulu April 29th.
So, I haven’t seen the short(s?) that this is based on, so I have zero idea what the deal is here, but I am intrigued by what I see. It’s definitely different, and it looks charming and funny. One of the maybe few family friendly stuff to come out of A24, I think. At least, I’m assuming. I’m just hoping it doesn’t fall under the same traps that a lot of films based on shorts fall into, feeling like they’re stretching out a small thing by adding extra stuff that doesn’t totally work. But I like Jenny Slate, and I’m curious to see how she fares as a writer.
Marcel The Shell With Shoes On hits theaters on June 24th.
I don’t know a lot about Charlotte Salomon (I wouldn’t recommend looking her up if you don’t want to be potentially spoiled about what happens). I’m always up for any western animation that isn’t geared towards kids, it’s so refreshing, and I wish we got more of it, especially in the mainstream space. This looks really good, I love the look of it, and it’s definitely something I’ll keep my eye out for.
Charlotte will be released in select theaters starting April 22nd.
Holy epilepsy, Batman. What an eyesore that trailer was. But the film itself looks great. Looks like Gaspar Noé has two films coming out this year, both of which seem like two complete opposite ends of the spectrum, with Vortex looking like nothing he’s ever done, and this looking like something right up his alley and in the most extreme sense. Interesting that this also heavily incorporates split-screen. I’m very much looking forward to this, and I’m curious to see how he continues to grow as a filmmaker.
Lux Æterna opens on May 6th at the Metrograph and will expand starting May 13th.
This is a series that is going to hit Amazon, and it combines two things I like, westerns and UFO shit. Think of it as a good Cowboys and Aliens (expect I actually kinda dug that movie, if I’m being honest). The trailer takes a weird tonal turn with that “Angel Of The Morning” bit, makes it seem more quirky than the previous part of the trailer was selling. Although, if this did have a sense of humor, that would be a plus. Either way, I dig the vibe here. It’s pushing a lot of buttons for me. I’m pretty picky with shows, but I think I’ll check this one out.
Outer Range will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on April 15th.
