Old Dads
Sure, I guess. I do like Bill Burr generally speaking. This definitely feels like his stand up routine translated into script form. I’m curious as to what exactly the plot is, which is usually not a concern for me, but in these cases, I can see this just being moment after moment of typical Burr routine in an isolated scene over and over again without much connective tissue. Who knows, maybe there’s a story here that they’re not advertising, I think “Bill Burr making directorial debut” is a more stronger advertising angle, so that would be understandable. I’ll give it a shot, I’m sure there’s gonna be some decent laughs.
Old Dads hits Netflix on October 20th
Dream Scenario
Wow, they really saved “the turn” for like the last 30 seconds, didn’t they? I haven’t seen anything from Norwegian filmmaker Kristoffer Borgli, but I really love the idea for this, it’s such a cool and unique concept. I can’t wait to see where they take it. Plus, Nicolas Cage is someone I’ll always tune in for, and he looks amazing here. This is one I’ll be keeping my eye out for.
Dream Scenario hits theaters on November 10th.
Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom
I don’t know, man…this looks pretty awesome. I really enjoyed the first Aquaman, I loved how weird, vibrant, and dorky it was. James Wan can direct a blockbuster like nobody’s business while also indulging in his own Strange interests and sensibilities. This looks, from the trailer at least, to be about more of the same. This is the last DC film to have any connection to the Snyder films, so there’s that pressure, plus the rumors about test screenings, which I honestly don’t care too much about. I’m gonna hold out hope that this will be another wild and weird adventure.
Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom hits theaters on December 20th.
Divinity
Now that’s what I call a trailer. That’s a trailer that knows how to make a good impression. I have no idea what I just saw, but I know it looked cool as hell. Plus, you got Steven Soderbergh’s stamp of approval, and he has the kind of taste that I could put my trust in. I don’t know any of the filmmakers involved here, aside from some recognizable actors, so I have no idea if this will be up my alley, but I will definitely be checking this out.
Divinity opens in select theaters on October 13th.
Butcher’s Crossing
Two Nic Cage trailers in one day, talk about a treat. I know this is based on a book, but it’s not one I’m familiar with, but I love westerns, and I love it when they take a different approach to the genre. This one seems to be going in a more atmospheric direction than your typical gunslinger narrative. I like the way it looks, Cage looks awesome, he’s certainly sporting an interesting look, so if the word on this is decent, I’ll have to give it a look.
Butcher’s Crossing opens in select theaters on October 20th.
Appendage
At first, I thought this would be another “strive for perfection” thriller like Black Swan or more recently The Novice, but man, this started getting into weird places pretty fast, and I like it. Love the body horror angle, and I’m curious to see what it all builds up to. I have some ideas, and if it’s anywhere nearly as gnarly as I would hope, this might be a damn good time.
Appendage streams exclusively on Hulu on October 2nd.
