Nope

Obviously, I’m all in on this. After Get Out and Us, Jordan Peele has become one of most exciting filmmakers in to hit Hollywood in a long time. This is a really cool teaser, and I like the idea of Peele potentially tackling a sci-fi/alien invasion conceit, if that is the case, it certainly seems like it. It’s also cool seeing him slowly expand his scope, from the lone house in Get Out to the town in Us, to now doing sequences shot with IMAX cameras here. I’m excited to see what he does with – what I’m assuming is –  a big budget.

Nope hits theaters on July 22nd.

 

Deep Water

Yes, bring back erotic thrillers! The current movie landscape is begging for some sleaze, and who else better to reintroduce this than Adrian Lyne, coming back behind the camera after 20 years. I am a touch worried because Sam Levinson is one of the credited writers, but considering the genre, and the fact that it’s an adaptation of a Patricia Highsmith novel, his sensibilities will both fit and be contained within the material he has to work with. It’s too bad this was taken out of theatrical distribution, but I suppose it makes sense. I’m definitely looking forward to this, and I hope it does well enough to bring this genre back.

Deep Water hits Hulu on March 18th.

 

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness

I’m honestly more excited for this as the new Sam Raimi film than I am as the new installment in the MCU. In this house, we love and respect Sam Raimi, and we’ve been devoid of new stuff from him for nearly a decade, not counting that Ash Vs Evil Dead pilot or that Golden Arm thing he did for Quibi (remember Quibi?). I was initially worried his presence wouldn’t be felt, but there are definitely hints of his personality shining through here, and with him bringing old collaborators like editor, Bob Murawski, and composer, Danny Elfman, I’m hoping Raimi can swoop in, and show everyone how it’s done.

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness will be released in theaters on May 6th.

I quite like most of Justin Kurzel’s work, his previous film, True History Of The Kelly Gang made my top 50 that year, and this looks like a return to his roots to something like Snowtown. I know this is based on a real shooting, and while I know a bit about how the shooting affected gun laws in Australia, I don’t know much about the actual shootings themselves or the guy behind it. This trailer is incredibly enticing and moody, a perfect way to set up the vibe. I’m sure this will be a tough watch, but it looks good.

Nitram opens in select theaters, VOD platforms, and AMC+ on March 30th.

 

Jurassic World Dominion

Alright…fine…this looks pretty fun. Third time’s the charm, I guess. I mean, it does help that it’s actually a “Jurassic World” now as opposed to just a park or a mansion. I always felt like these movies were like a draft or two away from actually being good and clever, but never got there. Obviously, I can’t say how this looks on that level, but at least it’s delivering on “here’s a bunch of real word scenarios if dinosaurs were thrown in” that I feel we’ve been promised. Up until this, we only had the San Diego sequence in The Lost World, but this could actually deliver. I hope it does. Normally, I would also be annoyed by bringing back old characters just to appease the nostalgia culture machine, but considering how little I’m invested or charmed by the leads in this trilogy, I’ll take it. Can’t say I have a ton of faith in Colin Trevorrow, but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Jurassic World Dominion opens in theaters on June 10th.

 

The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power

So, I’m guessing the racists are out in full force on this, right? Cause there’s really nothing else that could possibly be commented on, no plot elements, no major character introductions, just a few cool shots to tease the audience. I guess the special effects do give a bit of a Hobbit vibe in how CG heavy it is, but otherwise feels pretty similar in vibe and aesthetic to the Peter Jackson films. I know Tolkien had a lot of mythology for his world, so I was relieved that it seems like the folks behind this show are going in that route as opposed to doing a retelling of the trilogy. Not to say I ain’t skeptical, but I’ll give it a shot.

The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power will begin streaming on Amazon Prime Video on September 2nd.
