Trailer Talk: Nightbitch, Hard Truths, and more!

Nightbitch

I’ve seen some comments about how this is not the tone they expected, I guess from the vibe of the book. I don’t know, I haven’t read the book myself. However, I have a feeling that this is a case of the trailer being edited to make the film look and feel a certain – more accessible – way than it might actually be. Obviously, I won’t know for sure, but it’s a gut feeling I have, and plus, Marielle Heller has become one of my new favorite filmmakers, every movie she has made has been a knock-out, and I have faith that she will make the best choices for any story she is involved with. So, I’m keeping my fingers crossed on this, it looks like it will be very interesting.

Nightbitch his select theaters on December 6th.

Hard Truths

I love Mike Leigh, I think he’s an exemplary filmmaker, and one who has always kind of slipped under the radar despite being on the scene for many, many years, making classic after classic. I love his writing, the way he explores his characters, and the intimacy he often brings to his projects, while often dealing with bigger ideas about the world around us at the same time. Marianne Jean-Baptiste looks like she’s going to absolutely kill it with this role. I am really looking forward to this.

Hard Truths will be released in theaters on January 10th, 2025.

Rumours

So, that was a short but interesting little teaser. This is from a whopping three directors, Guy Maddin and Galen and Evan Johnson. It certainly looks very weird, and I like weird, so this is definitely a movie I’ll be eagerly awaiting for. Not a whole lot to add here, but the teaser did its job, I like what I see.

Rumours hits select theaters on October 18th.

Apartment 7A

This doesn’t look bad! I know it seems like a weird thing to randomly produce a prequel to Rosemary’s Baby, but if there’s a vision behind it, then go ahead, and it looks like there is. This is from Natalie Erika James, who made Relic, which I didn’t love, but I admired, and I’m willing to see what she does next. This feels more like my speed, and it seems like there’s a lot of intention that went into this. Not unlike the recent First Omen, which ruled. So, if this has the same energy, we might be in for a treat.

Apartment 7A streams exclusively on Paramount+ on September 27th.

Memoir Of A Snail

Adam Elliot hasn’t made a feature film since his debut Mary and Max in 2009, so I’m very excited that he finally has a new project coming out. I love his style and aesthetic, and the animation is as stunning as you’d expect. This has definitely jumped up my list of most anticipated films of the year, I can’t wait to see it.

Memoir Of A Snail opens in select theaters on October 25th.

V/H/S/BEYOND

These movies have been kinda hit-and-miss, but I do like them more than I don’t. And I suspect it will be the same with this one as well. Anthologies are always hard to pull off, but there are some interesting filmmakers involved, so I’ll definitely be up for checking it out. I like that Shudder has made this series a yearly tradition, it gives me something to look forward to every Halloween, even if the individual films can be a mixed bag. But keeping my fingers crossed for this one.

V/H/S/BEYOND will stream on Shudder on October 4th.
