Never Let Go

I like Alexandre Aja quite a bit, especially his more recent work, it just feels so much more refined and tight. This looks pretty interesting. I am anticipating some kind of twist, it just has that feeling like it’s hiding something big. But I don’t know what, so it’s not like I have a surprise being ruined. I like Halle Berry, and it’s cool to see her lead a mean little genre film like this. I’m really looking forward to it.

Never Let Go hits theaters on September 27th.

Longlegs

This is one of my most anticipated movies of the year. I love Osgood Perkins, I love Nicolas Cage, I love Maika Monroe  and I love the idea of them coming together for what basically looks like a riff on a Silence Of The Lambs type narrative, which we surprisingly don’t get many of. Crime movies that lean into horror sensibilities. It looks awesome, and I’ve been intrigued by Neon’s marketing for the film. I hope it pays off.

Longlegs opens in theaters on July 12th.

Am I OK?

This is the directorial debut for Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne, who are partners, which makes for a compelling dynamic, and I’m curious to see how that is reflected on screen. I haven’t seen a lot of Notaro’s stuff, but of the stuff that I have seen, I have really enjoyed. This definitely has that dry humor I recognize. Dakota Johnson is someone I also really enjoy seeing, and she looks great here. It looks really solid, I’ll definitely be checking this out.

Am I OK? streams exclusively on Max starting June 6th.

It Ends With US

I’ve never heard of this book that this is apparently based on. Looks like a fairly by-the-numbers romantic drama, but I like a good romance. I feel like I haven’t seen Blake Lively in a while, so it’ll be nice to see her again, especially in a space that she normally excels at. Can’t say I’ll be holding my breath for this  but I’ll be seeing it for sure.

It Ends With Us hits theaters on August 9th.

Late Bloomers

Looks OK, I suppose. Looks like fairly standard feel-good fluff, but I do like Karen Gillan a lot, and I think she can easily carry a movie like this, and will probably elevate the material into something more genuine and resonating. I’m sure this will be a very pleasant time if nothing else. It looks like it’s being very genuine and thoughtful about its characters and emotional arcs. So, maybe there will be something special here, but hard to say based on this trailer alone.

Late Bloomers opens in select theaters and VOD platforms on June 7th.

Wicked

Definitely looks like a lot of money has been put into this. Two things, once again we have a movie musical that seems to mostly avoid showing off the fact that it’s a musical. I know that most people might assume it’s a musical because the Broadway show is so popular, but the show was based on a book. I just find this marketing trend to be very weird. And also, another part one of two that doesn’t seem to advertise it as such. I wonder how well known that fact is. And the next one will be coming around the same time next year, so I wonder how people will react. It looks fine, I’ve listened to the songs, and this looks like it will be a compelling spectacle, so hopefully we’re in for a good time.

Wicked hits theaters on November 27th.
