Mad God

I’ve been hearing about this one for a long time. Phil Tippett has been in the game for a while, and he has quite the resume to show for it. I’ve been eager to see something from this, and I’m not disappointed by what I see. This looks really cool, a very obvious passion project, which can sometimes be hit or miss, but the atmosphere in the trailer, and the details that we see are pretty impressive. I’m really looking forward to this.

Mad God will be released on Shudder on June 16th.

Avatar: The Way Of Water

Avatar is a good movie. I think it’s weird that this has been a topic of debate, probably only because of its status as the highest grossing film ever. It’s by no means my favorite Cameron, but a lot of it rocks. At least, enough for me to get over the fact it’s about a white dude who puts on the face of a native in order to mingle with their population. Anway, I dug that movie, and I’ve always been curious to see how Cameron would follow it up, and now that we finally have a look, it still looks as gorgeous as ever. I’m hoping this doesn’t start the trend over again, but I’m excited to see this in 3D.

Avatar: The Way Of Water hits theaters on December 16th.

Dinner In America

Gotta be honest, this trailer isn’t doing a whole lot for me, but based on the word-of-mouth and the reviews that are out there, maybe this is just another example of a trailer messing up the timing and rhythm of its comedy. A fairly common thing that I’ve talked about before. I do find it weird how much of it hinges on these parents not liking rock concerts, as if that’s even a concern among modern parents. But, hey, I’m not a parent, so who knows, maybe that’s a thing. The cast here is pretty solid, so if they saw something in this material, maybe the trailer isn’t doing a good job of selling it. I’ll give it a shot.

Dinner In America opens in select theaters on May 27th, and on VOD on June 7th.

Bitterbrush

Can’t say I’ve seen a ton of movies, or even documentaries, about cowgirls. This is obviously taking a more somber and fly-on-the-wall approach, which looks to be pretty effective from the looks of this trailer. There are some really stunning shots too all throughout this thing, and I’m digging the bits of banter we’re getting from the subjects. I’ll be keeping an eye out for this.

Bitterbrush opens in select theaters on June 17th.

Hustle

This definitely looks more sprawling than I initially thought after seeing the teaser, but it still looks pretty good. I dig Adam Sandler on drama mode, and this really seems like the kind of character I can see him sink his teeth into. Not a lot else to add, it looks great, it has a lot of energy to it, the premise is solid, and even if it seems a bit conventional, that’s kind of the appeal with these stories, so I’m looking forward to this.

Hustle hits Netflix on June 8th.

House Of The Dragon

OK, I have to open up about something. I never really took Game Of Thrones seriously. Like, early on, it had this reputation as the boobs and blood fantasy show, but after a few seasons, it got taken seriously as prestige television by people…except that transition never happened with me, I always saw it as mainly trash. But entertaining trash. So because of that, I wasn’t as upset by the ending of the show. That said, I’m not so into the world that I’m necessarily excited for this prequel, I was more interested in the one developed by Jane Goldman with Naomi Watts, but that was shut down in favor of this. So, maybe I’ll give it a chance, but I’m not expecting myself to watch this every week like I did with Game Of Thrones. I did find the last line to be kind of funny “History does not remember blood, it remembers names,” because one of the things I struggled for so long with the other show was trying to remember all the names, but I remember all the bloody bits pretty well.

House Of The Dragon will premiere on HBO on August 21st on HBO.
