Like A Boss
Well…I’m sure at the very least everyone involved got some bills and mortgages paid off because of this, so it’s not a total waste. Granted, comedy trailers rarely seem to work for me, and it’s certainly possible the movie is much better than advertised, but the trailer still isn’t that compelling, despite the cast. Miguel Arteta sure has a weird filmography.
Like A Boss opens in theaters on January 10th, 2020.
Waves
Trey Edward Shults has impressed me quite a bit with his debut, Krisha, and I admired what he did with It Comes At Night, so I’m pretty much on board with whatever he does. This looks fantastic, and the word coming out of its festival run is really great. Kelvin Harrison, Jr. was stellar in Luce, so I’m just happy to see him in something new so soon. And plus, while it’s not noted in the trailer, you can never go wrong with a film scored by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. I’m very much looking forward to this.
Waves hits theaters on November 1st.
Black Christmas
I think the trailer gives a bit too much away, so I’m just gonna try and forget about half the stuff I saw. The 1874 Black Christmas is great, and I would normally be a bit apprehensive about a remake, especially considering the one we got back in 2006. However, the co-writer and director of this is Sophia Takal, and I loved her debut film, Always Shine, from a couple years ago. Track that down if you haven’t already. It’s a stellar psychological thriller, very beautifully made, and smart, and I hope she can bring some of those sensibilities to this remake.
Black Christmas opens in theaters on December 13th.
The Traitor
Watching this I realized that I haven’t seen many gangster movies that are actually made in Italy, which feels so weird. That’s something I should probably amend, and this looks like a decent enough place to start. The story of the first mafia boss to be an informant is an interesting one, and it looks to be compelling. Part crime drama, part procedural, a detailed look at the inner-workings of the mafia, it all looks cool. I’ll try to keep an eye out for this one.
The Traitor does not have an announced release date yet, but will open in theaters in early 2020.
Mister America
I don’t normally connect with the humor that Tim Heidecker is known for, but I found myself chuckling a few times in this. I think the premise is amusing, and there is a lot to mine in the format of a campaign documentary, so I’m curious to see how he plays with it. I can’t say I have the highest expectations for this, but it could be smart and fun if they play their cards right.
Mister America will be released in select theaters on October 9th.
