Trailer Talk

Trailer Talk: Lightyear, Ambulance, and more!

Lightyear

This will probably come across as more harsh than intended, but…this feels like a joke. Right? Like a parody trailer you’d see in a Tropic Thunder type thing? I can’t be the only one who thinks this. I know I’m not because I remember folks being very confused about the nature of this film, and what exactly it is supposed to be. I’d like to think of it as the adaptation of the Buzz Lightyear toy within the Toy Story universe. At least, that’s the explanation that makes my head hurt the least. The thing is, though…this teaser is excellent, I almost hate to say it, but I’m totally sold on this. It looks like a fun space adventure, and y’all know how much I love those, so Pixar doing one, even if they have to force themselves to attach it to an IP, is still a bit exciting to me. I can’t wait to see this.

Lightyear hits theaters on June 17th, 2022.

Ambulance

Guys, this looks awesome. I’m sorry, I know Michael Bay may not be the most popular guy out there, but damn, does he know how to make spectacle like no other. This legitimately has some of the best drone shots I’ve ever seen, and way more imaginative in their use than the typical establishing shots they’re so often used for. The action looks great and energetic as all hell, and the actors look like they’re committing to the material 100%. I don’t see anything that might seem off. It looks like one hell of a ride, and I am totally in for it.

Ambulance hits theaters on February 18th, 2022.

Red Notice

I mean, props to Rawson Marshall Thurber for being able to make a turn from comedy director to original, big budget action movies. It’s too bad they’re not that interesting. This looks really bland. It’s too bad because this is the kind of stuff I would like to see more, big movies driven less by IP and more by charismatic movie stars, but it feels like everyone is going through the motions here. Maybe it’s just the way the trailer is assembled, but I’m not impressed.

Red Notice opens in select theaters on November 5th before hitting Netflix on November 12th.

Uncharted

Yeah…no. This isn’t doing it for me. My biggest thing about an Uncharted movie adaptation is that it would be impossible to capture what makes those games so fun and engaging on screen. They’re basically Indiana Jones on steroids, the setpieces are ridiculously huge, and in order to bring that to screen, a ton of CG will be required, and when that happens, it will just look like you’re watching gameplay, and instead of focusing on the story at hand, you’ll end up wishing you were playing the game instead. And watching this trailer, my worries were not tempered. It could be an amusing watch, I suppose, you got good actors here, but I would much rather just put in one of the games.

Uncharted hits theaters on February 18th, 2022.

A Hero

I’m always into whatever Asghar Farhadi has coming out, I love his output, and he always finds ways to intrigue me with every project, especially with his down-to-Earth, humanistic approach to his stories and characters. This looks no different, the setup is interesting, the actors look great, and it really sucks you into the world that the characters are inhabiting. This is definitely one I’ll keep an eye out for.

A Hero hits theaters on January 7th, before being available on Amazon Prime on January 21st, 2022.

The Unforgivable

Gotta say, the first half of this felt like it was gonna go in a more genre-y direction than the drama that was more emphasized in the second half. Was honestly more interested in that initial feeling, but you know what, this still looks solid. I wanna see where this character goes, and Bullock is certainly giving it her all. I’ll check it out!

The Unforgivable opens in select theaters November 24th before hitting Netflix on December 10th.
