Last Night In Soho
Gotta say, I did not expect there to be a time travel element in this. I was already looking forward to this because I really like Edgar Wright as a filmmaker, and while I didn’t necessarily love Baby Driver as much as I would have liked, I really enjoyed seeing him experiment with genres beyond the comedies he was mainly known for. I’m sensing a little giallo, a little Nicolas Roeg, a little early Polanski. Definitely a collection of flavors you don’t see in a ton of modern horror. It’s also no surprise that it’s visually interesting, but I really can’t wait to see how this story plays out. It definitely has me intrigued.
Last Night In Soho opens in theaters on October 22nd.
Eternals
I don’t know if it was just my timeline, but prior to me seeing the trailer, when I went on Twitter to see what the general reactions to this were, it seemed like everyone had their knives out for it. And after seeing the trailer, I’m a bit puzzled by that reaction. I mean, it’s a teaser, there’s clearly a lot of info being withheld, but in terms of setting up a vibe, I like what it’s giving me. While I wouldn’t call it groundbreaking or even that subversive, it doesn’t really look like any other Marvel movie, especially compared to other films coming out this year like Shang-Chi and Black Widow. Now, I’m not expecting Chloé Zhao to break the mold or anything, but the teaser does exactly what it needs to, it leaves me wanting to know more. I particularly want to know what these folks were doing during the whole Thanos situation. Plus, I think it’s kinda cool seeing Harish Patel show up in one of these movies.
Eternals hits theaters on November 5th.
The Tomorrow War
I don’t know. I just have a lot of questions, but one that I can’t stop thinking about is – why are the soldiers coming to the future just being dropped from skyscraper heights? It looks like half the soldiers are going to hit the ground and without so much as a parachute. This looks deceptively simple, as if the folks behind the trailer are trying really hard to hide some kind of twist. Also, considering this is the live action debut for Chris McKay of The LEGO Batman Movie and also shot by Larry Fong – a regular Zack Snyder collaborator, this doesn’t look all that interesting from a visual standpoint, which is disappointing. I also hope Betty Gilpin gets more to do than being “the wife” because she proved herself to be a thoroughly capable and awesome action star from her turn in The Hunt. Sorry to sound all negative, I’ll give this a shot, but this trailer is doing very little for me.
The Tomorrow War premieres on Amazon Prime Video on July 2nd.
Escape Room: Tournament Of Champions
I don’t remember a whole lot from the first Escape Room movie, but I remember that it ended in a way that implied the two main characters were going to have their plan ride sabotaged by the mysterious villain, but it looks like they just changed it to a train. Whatever, not a big deal, I don’t think the continuity is meant to be this franchise’s strongsuit. Anyway, I recall thinking the first one was fine as a disposable PG-13 horror film. I don’t know if people are gonna embrace a sequel three whole years later, but we’ll see. This pretty much looks like more of the same, but bigger, and it looks…fine. Taylor Russell is a really talented actress, so that will be one thing to look forward to, and some of these sequences do look fun. I don’t see why this would be any better or any worse than the first one.
Escape Room: Tournament Of Champions opens in theaters on July 16th.
False Positive
I’m not a fan of how this tailor is edited, especially with how they try to incorporate The Ronettes’ “Be My Baby,” it just feels sloppy, and it doesn’t help with creating the intended atmosphere. It actually took me a second to realize what this was because I recall reading about Ilana Glazer writing and starring in a horror film that was supposed to be like a modern day Rosemary’s Baby, but I was under the assumption that it was something coming next year maybe, not in a month. It’s directed by John Lee, who among a lot of TV stuff, directed Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, which I loved, but I’m not sure his skill set is translating well to horror. At least, just based on this trailer. I want this to be good, so I’ll be cautiously optimistic, but as far as the trailer goes, I don’t think it totally works.
Falso Positive premieres on Hulu June 25th.
Long Story Short
I gotta say, having the song in the trailer literally screaming, “don’t take your life for granted,” is a bit on the nose. But aside from that, I’m really pleasantly surprised by this. Out of all the trailers here, this one feels the most fresh. While it isn’t a time loop movie, it utilizes some of the same principles, in having a character change over the course of the movie through weird time related mishaps, and the concept of going forward a year after every night gives the film some really high stakes that are usually not present in typical time loop movies. It’s also noteworthy because it’s written and directed by Josh Lawson, who played Kano in the recent Mortal Kombat movie, one of the few good things about that movie if we’re being honest. He’s directed another film before, but I haven’t seen it. I also quite like Rafe Spall, he’s done good work in everything I’ve seen him in. Yeah, I didn’t expect this to wow me, but it did. I can’t wait to see it.
Long Story Short hits VOD platforms on July 2nd.
