I Used To Be Funny
Gotta say, did not see that missing teen plot point coming. What a turn. Now, like many folks, I have definitely caught a bit of the Rachel Sennott fever, I think she’s very funny and talented, so I’m going to be very curious whatever she has coming out, and this looks pretty interesting. I can definitely see this being a meaty role that’s a bit different from what we’ve already seen of her. I will be keeping an eye out for this.
I Used To Be Funny opens in select theaters on June 7th before being made available on VOD platforms on June 18th.
Young Woman And The Sea
Man, I remember when Disney used to make a bunch of inspirational sports movies like this. I feel like it’s been forever. I think it’s also been forever since they released a movie not based on a property they own. This doesn’t look half bad. These movies can be very endearing, and despite how well worn this genre is, given we haven’t gotten anything like it in a while, it feels like a breath of fresh air. Can’t say I’m excited for it, but it looks solid.
Young Woman And The Sea will be released in theaters on May 31st.
Speak No Evil
Hmm…I don’t know. I’m of two minds about this. One, I’m worried that this will go for a much safer and crowd-pleasing ending compared to the dark and bleak ending of the original. The somewhat action-y bits toward the end do seem like it’s leaning that way. But also, this is from Eden Lake filmmaker Jamea Watkins, a feel-bad classic, so hopefully this being a studio release won’t hold it back from being as dark as it should. Keeping my fingers crossed.
Speak No Evil opens in theaters on September 12th.
Joker: Folie À Deux
Certified Joker hater here. This trailer looks really cool. I’m so annoyed by how cool this looks to me. Granted, I am very upset that this is a jukebox musical and not full of original songs. That felt like a huge missed opportunity, so I’m still not 100% sold on it. But this looks genuinely interesting and weird and unique in all the ways the original Joker wasn’t. So…consider me intrigued.
Joker: Folie À Deux hits theaters on October 4th.
Family Portrait
Watching this trailer brings to mind the Trey Esward Shults film Krisha, which similarly took what would appear to be a standard family gathering and take a very psychological and chaotic and atmospheric approach to the setup. I’m not quite sure what the basic setup is with this family, but it is eerie and unsettling. It has my curiosity for sure, I’ll have to give this a look.
Family Portrait opens in select theaters on June 28th before expanding in the following weeks.
You Can’t Run Forever
Sorry, but I cackled at the moment J.K. Simmons yelled out, “I’ll be your new daddy.” Honestly, looks pretty fun. Trashy fun, but fun nonetheless. I don’t know what beef this old dude has with this teenage girl, but he sure is persistent. Could go either way, to be honest. But if there’s some good word-of-mouth on this, I probably be more enthusiastic about it when I hear jeers about the thing that was supposed to connect him with his lineage.
You Can’t Run Forever opens in select theaters and VOD platforms on May 17th.
